Is Effortless Flight Possible?
In the fluid known as air, and among the strangest of all discoveries is the so-called Katzmayr Effect - little known to the average reader.
Now, in the offset, the Katzmayr Effect rather savors of perpetual motion, but it is not a "something-for-nothing" device in reality. It can be proved both mathematically and in the wind tunnel that negative drag or negative resistance is possible in fact, and negative drag is the same thing as a self-contained positive propelling force attained without the aid of external motors, engines or rockets.
Of course, it is not sufficient to simply nullify the drag of the wing alone to attain self-propelled flight. There must also be a sufficient excess of the forward component to overcome the additional resistance o the body and the other structural parts. But, from data at hand, it would seem that this excess forward component is present in the Katzmayr development.
Now, we have had many reports of birds soaring with motionless wings where no vertical air currents were apparent. And the writer has witnesses soaring flights by gulls where vertical currents of any great magnitude were entirely absent. Therefore, it would be possible that the gulls employed a means of sustention the same or similar to the Katzmayr principle in maintaining fixed wing flight. And in support of this idea, it will be noted that the wings of a gull, when seen at close range, do have a rapid vibrationj that must vary the angle of attack periodically.
Part of this flutter is due to the extreme flexibility of the trailing edge of the gull's wing which effectively changes the angle of the wing to the breeze.
It is said that the results are independent of the frequency or rate of the vibrations, at least this was so in the wind-tunnel tests, but in practice it would be necessary to choose a sufficiently high frequency so that the inertia of the airplane would hole it in position during the short period of the positive drag.
This might take the form of a wing slot oscillator or air guide vibrating in front of the nose so that the air would be diverted at the proper angles. There is no way of forecasting just what could be applied to the best advantage to obtain the effect of variable oscillating wing mechanisms.
Pumping and the Katzmayr Effect - Pumping is the action of fanning the sail back and forth in such a way as to increase forward momentum. You may have observed windsurfers energetically wafting their sails and wondered how this action generates thrust (as an aeronautical engineer would call it, though some sailors call it ''negative drag'') for their rigs. A simple explanation follows. Pumping represents another difference between yachts and sailboards, at least in races, because for yachts pumping is controversially illegal whereas for sailboards it is de rigueur, even for Olympic competition. A sailor is permitted to sheet in his sail and then let it out, but repeating the action constitutes pumping. Legal or not, the action is feasible only for small yachts because it requires a lot of energy. There have been many studies of the power expended by windsurfers when they pump their (relatively small) sails; the conclusion is that the rate of energy expenditure rivals that of a Tour de France cyclist or a distance runner. Pumping is important for windsurfers because it can get their boards planing very quickly. For a sail that is being pumped, the action serves to oscillate the apparent wind angle of attack. The same action can be attained in a wind tunnel by fixing an airfoil and subjecting it to winds that vary in direction.
Edward FARROW - Condensing Dynamo - The dictionary describes wave motions as "motion in curves alternately concave and convex, like that of waves of the sea". It may be better illustrated by supposing that one has an enormous bowl of stiff jelly into which have been stuck a couple of hatpins some distance apart. Any vibratory motion given to one pin is imitated by the second pin. The jelly conveys the energy from one pin to another ; we have set up wave motion within the jelly. It is immaterial whether the motion is up or down or from right to left -- indeed it may be at any angle whatever. It is in this way that waves of light and sounds are conveyed by the air or the universal ether.
The textbooks describe gravity as "weight as contradistinguished from mass; precisely, the downward acceleration of terrestrial bodies due to the gravitation of the earth modified by the centrifugal force due to its revolution on its axis."
The apparent defiance of this law by eagles soaring immovable, over the desert were more a source of wonder to the young scientist than the feats of the Indian medicine men. Similarly he had observed other sailing or gliding birds, hawks and buzzards, hand high in the air, motionless so far as the human eye could tell, and unaffected by the wave motion of the ether or the laws of gravitation. Even after the conquest of the air by man the common explanation of the extended wings of the birds acting as aeroplanes did not seem at all logical or sufficient to Mr Farrow.
When the motive power of an aeroplane ceases while the machine is in the air, the plane comes downward, gliding to the earth. But soaring birds, without motion of the wings and without a propeller to push them into the wind, rise to heights, almost out of sight, sailing in great circles, alternately going with and against the wind.

'The Evolution of Matter' and 'The Evolution of Forces' on CD
Years ago, I had been told by several people, that the US government frequently removes books they deem dangerous or 'sensitive' from libraries. Such a wealth of original discoveries, many not known or remembered today. / Page 88 - Without the ether there could be neither gravity, nor light, nor electricity, nor heat, nor anything, in a word, of which we have knowledge. On reaching the metal wires with which these vessels are nowadays honeycombed, this will excite an atmosphere of sparks which will at once explode the shells and torpedoes stored in their holds. With the same reflector, giving a pencil of parallel radiations, it would not be much more difficult to cause the explosion of the stores of powder and shells contained in a fortress, or in the artillery sparks of an army corps, and finally the metal cartridges of the soldiers. Science, which at first rendered wars so deadly, would then at length have rendered them impossible, and the relations between nations would have to be established on new bases."
