~ Quote of the day ~

Please tell your friends about KeelyNet  ...Thanks! KeelyNet has been online now for 8 years as a BBS, followed by 15 years on the Internet and counting!

Raison d'tre
KeelyNet "This is the true joy in life: To being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. To being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

KeelyNet I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work, the more I live.

I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

05/30/12 - Build Your Own Hovering Lawn Chair
Adam Savage, of Mythbusters fame, has an easy to follow tutorial on building a hovering lawn chair so you can be mobile without ever having to actually get up all weekend.

All you need is a cheap piece of plywood, a leaf blower, some duct tape, a few other items you can probably find in your shed, and a bit of confidence with your power tools.

You can even use something more comfortable than a white plastic lawn chair as the seat, just keep in mind that you'll want it to be as light as possible.

And once it's built, as long as you keep a gas can within reach, you're guaranteed one of the laziest Memorial Days you've ever experienced. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    05/30/12 - Cotton Super Capacitors
KeelyNet A new conductive cotton fabric able to store energy could help power the new generation of flexible electronics and medical implants.

Xiaodong Li, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of South Carolina, created the highly conductive cotton by soaking a $5 cotton T-shirt in a sodium fluoride solution for an hour and then drying it at two different levels of heat, which changed the cotton to activate carbon.

The still-flexible material was then coated with a nano-layer of metal manganese oxide, transforming the fabric to a super capacitor with 97.3 percent retention.

The process is inexpensive and eco-friendly, costing up to 10 times less than processing coal or petroleum into activated carbon. (Thanks to Norman Wootan for this headsup. - JWD) - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/30/12 - Gene controls chronic inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer
KeelyNet A new study by researchers at the NYU School of Medicine reveals that AUF1, a family of four related genes, not only controls the inflammatory response, but also maintains the integrity of chromosomes by activating the enzyme telomerase to repair the ends of chromosomes, thereby simultaneously reducing inflammation, preventing rapid aging and the development of cancer, Dr. Schneider explained.

AUF1 is a medical and scientific trinity, said principal investigator Robert J. Schneider, PhD. Nature has designed a way to simultaneously turn off harmful inflammation and repair our chromosomes, thereby suppressing aging at the cellular level and in the whole animal.

With this new information, Dr. Schneider and colleagues are examining human populations for specific types of genetic alterations in the AUF1 gene that are associated with the co-development of certain immune diseases, increased rates of aging and higher cancer incidence in individuals to determine exactly how the alterations manifest and present themselves clinically. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/30/12 - Ambient WIFI Energy Harvester
RCA has unveiled a device called "Airenergy" that uses wireless electricity from radio frequencies in the air to charge your USB gadgets.

That's right, you no longer have to search for an outlet, or lug around ten different charges to repower your laptop, camera, ebook reader... you just need proximity to a WiFi source. (Thanks to Norman Wootan for the headsup on this, reminds me of Don Smith and his BS. - JWD)

Tate Ambient Energy Harvester - The Ambient Power Module (APM) is a simple electronic circuit which, when connected to antenna and earth ground, will deliver low voltage up to several milliwatts. The amount of voltage and power will be determined by local radio noise levels and antenna dimensions. Generally a long wire antenna about 100' long and elevated in a horizontal position about 30' above ground works best. A longer antenna may be required in some locations. Any type copper wire, insulated or not, may be used for the antenna. More details about the antenna and ground will be discussed further on. The actual circuit consists of two oppositely polarized voltage doublers (Figure 1). The DC output of each doubler is connected in series with the other to maximize voltage without using transformers. Single voltage doublers were often found in older TV sets for converting 120 VAC to 240 VDC. In the TV circuit the operating frequency is 60 Hz. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    05/30/12 - 54mph Electric Motorcycle refit
KeelyNet The folks over at the Cincinnati hackerspace Hive13 were wowed last week by an electric motorcycle built by one of their own.

[Rick]s new ride is built from a 1989 Honda VTR 250. After removing the 24 HP motor, the frame was loaded up with four deep cycle batteries and a DC golf cart motor.

Right now, [Rick]s build can reach 54 mph; comparable to an earlier ebike we saw, but [Rick] can also go 100 about 20 miles on a single charge.

After the break you can see a short time lapse of [Rick] tearing down his bike, the first ride though the Cincinnati hackerspace, and a very nice road test showing off the speed of [Rick]s new ride. Theres also a great Flickr slideshow with some really great pics of the build in progress. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/27/12 - Sound Increases the Efficiency of Boiling
"Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology achieved a 17-percent increase in boiling efficiency by using an acoustic field to enhance heat transfer.

The acoustic field does this by efficiently removing vapor bubbles from the heated surface and suppressing the formation of an insulating vapor film."

Bubble removal was enhanced because the acoustic field induces capillary waves on the bubble, causing its contact line to contract and detach the bubble from the surface.

The mechanisms associated with these interactions were explored using three acoustic experiments: an air bubble on the underside of a horizontal surface, a single vapor bubble on the top side of a horizontal heated surface, and pool boiling from a horizontal heated surface.

The researchers were able to isolate and identify the dominant forces involved in these acoustically forced motions by measuring the capillary waves induced on the bubbles, bubble motion, and heat transfer during boiling.

Comment from reader: "This technique was used in the production of HHO gas, or Brown's gas, a few years back. the researcher reported a VERY large increase in the production efficiency of Brown's gas (HHO, or Rhodes gas-official name). Of course he was lambasted." - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/27/12 - Ancient Chinese Tongue Analysis Software Warns of Disease
KeelyNet For 5,000 years, the Chinese have used a system of medicine based on the flow and balance of positive and negative energies in the body. In this system, the appearance of the tongue is one of the measures used to classify the overall physical status of the body, or zheng. Now, University of Missouri researchers have developed computer software that combines the ancient practices and modern medicine by providing an automated system for analyzing images of the tongue.

Our software helps bridge Eastern and Western medicine, since an imbalance in zheng could serve as a warning to go see a doctor. Within a year, our ultimate goal is to create an application for smartphones that will allow anyone to take a photo of their tongue and learn the status of their zheng.

The software analyzes images based on the tongues color and coating to distinguish between tongues showing signs of hot or cold zheng. Shades of red and yellow are associated with hot zheng, whereas a white coating on the tongue is a sign of cold zheng.

Hot and cold zheng doesnt refer directly to body temperature, said Xu, who is also on the faculty of the Bond Life Sciences Center. Rather, it refers to a suite of symptoms associated with the state of the body as a whole.

For example, a person with cold zheng may feel chills and coolness in the limbs and show a pale flushing of face. Their voice may have a high pitch. Other symptoms of cold sheng are clear urine and loose stool. They also may prefer hot foods and drinks and desire warm environments.

In Chinese traditional medicine both hot and cold zheng can be symptoms of gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining frequently caused by bacterial infection.

For the study, 263 gastritis patients and 48 healthy volunteers had their tongues analyzed. The gastritis patients were classified by whether they showed infection by a certain bacteria, known as Helicobacter pylori, as well as the intensity of their gastritis symptoms. In addition, most of the gastritis patients had been previously classified with either hot or cold zheng. This allowed the researchers to verify the accuracy of the softwares analysis.

Our software was able to classify people based on their zheng status, said study co-author Ye Duan, associate professor of computer science at MU.

As we continue to work on the software we hope to improve its ability, Duan said. Eventually everyone will be able to use this tool at home using webcams or smartphone applications. That will allow them to monitor their zheng and get an early warning about possible ailments. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    05/27/12 - Noise-Canceling Tech Quietens Noisy Restaurants
An accomplished sound engineer has figured out a way to solve that problem, using technology similar to that of noise-canceling headphones.

Using 123 cleverly hidden speakers, an array of highly sensitive microphones and noise-canceling technology, sound engineer (and now restaurant owner) John Paluska has teamed up with Meyer Sound to create a way to make the noise of conversation cancel itself out, letting him control the ambient sound levels in his restaurant using an iPad app. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/27/12 - The Easter Island heads also have BODIES
KeelyNet The Easter Island Statue Project has been carefully excavating two of 1,000-plus statues on the islands - doing their best to uncover the secrets of the mysterious stones, and the people who built them.

Project director Jo Anne Van Tilburg said: 'Our EISP excavations recently exposed the torsos of two 7m tall statues.

'Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of visitors to the island have been astonished to see that, indeed, Easter Island statues have bodies!

Among their discoveries, the team have discovered:

The dirt and detritus partially burying the statues was washed down from above and not deliberately placed there to bury, protect, or support the statues

The statues were erected in place and stand on stone pavements

Post holes were cut into bedrock to support upright tree trunks

Rope guides were cut into bedrock around the post holes

Posts, ropes, stones, and different types of stone tools were all used to carve and raise the statues upright

The team also discovered that ceremonies were certainly associated with the statues.

On the project website, Van Tilburg said: 'We found large quantities of red pigment, some of which may have been used to paint the statues.

'Finally, and perhaps most poignantly, we found in the pavement under one statue a single stone carved with a crescent symbol said to represent a canoe, or vaka.

'The backs of both statues are covered with petroglyphs, many of which are also vaka. A direct connection between the vaka symbol and the identity of the artist or group owning the statue is strongly suggested.' - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/27/12 - Feeling strong emotions makes peoples brains tick together
KeelyNet Research team at Aalto University and Turku PET Centre has revealed how experiencing strong emotions synchronizes brain activity across individuals.

Human emotions are highly contagious. Seeing others emotional expressions such as smiles triggers often the corresponding emotional response in the observer. Such synchronization of emotional states across individuals may support social interaction: When all group members share a common emotional state, their brains and bodies process the environment in a similar fashion.

Researchers at Aalto University and Turku PET Centre have now found that feeling strong emotions makes different individuals brain activity literally synchronous.

The results revealed that especially feeling strong unpleasant emotions synchronized brains emotion processing networks in the frontal and midline regions. On the contrary, experiencing highly arousing events synchronized activity in the networks supporting vision, attention and sense of touch.

Sharing others emotional states provides the observers a somatosensory and neural framework that facilitates understanding others intentions and actions and allows to tune in or sync with them. Such automatic tuning facilitates social interaction and group processes, says Adjunct Professor Lauri Nummenmaa from the Aalto University.

The results have major implications for current neural models of human emotions and group behaviour, but also deepen our understanding of mental disorders involving abnormal socioemotional processing, Nummenmaa says.

Participants brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging while they were viewing short pleasant, neutral and unpleasant movies.. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/24/12 - 19-year-old student invents futuristic 'warp drive' for satellites
KeelyNet Mustafa's invention generates energy using the Casimir-Polder force, an obscure quantum effect using two surfaces and objects in a vacuum.

The force is described as an 'invisible rubber band' between bulky objects and atoms that arises from the ever-present random fluctuation of microscopic electric fields in empty space.

The fluctuations get stronger near a surface, and an isolated neutral atom nearby feels the force as a 'pull'.

Mustafa's drive isn't exactly Warp Factor Ten material, but it provides enough energy for satellites to maneouvre gracefully through space.

Instead of using nuclear reactors or jets, Mustafa's satellites could generate drive using the panels.

Nasa had researched a similar idea using the Casimir-Polder force - with the idea of generating it around a 'sail' floating in space.

She has patented her invention Egyptian Academy of scientific Research and Technology (ASRT).

Quantum field theory (QFT) predicts that an oscillating uncharged mirror in free space (vacuum) generates electromagnetic radiation (photons), i.e., it shines. This effect does not have an analogue in classical physics, where all electromagnetic radiation is generated by moving charges (e.g., electrons).

The photon creation process predicted by QFT is due to the interaction between the time-dependent boundary condition, imposed by the moving mirror, and the quantum mechanical vacuum fluctuations. Kinetic energy of the moving mirror is transferred to the electromagnetic field due to this interaction, and virtual vacuum photons are upconverted to real photons that propogates away from the mirror.

The dynamical Casimir effect has a solid theoretical foundation, but it has not yet been observed in experiments. The main reason is the experimental difficulties in moving the mirror sufficiently fast to generate a detectable amount of photons.

However, in recent years realistic experimental proposals have been presented, and experimental verification of the dynamical Casimir effect is likely within the near future. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    05/24/12 - 60 second plastic surgery (Jan, 1954)

It may be a broken nose that mars the appearance of its owner, or perhaps a hollow spot in the forehead due to a war injury. In many other cases it is just a question of vanity or the need for particularly attractive features in ones business. Whatever the reason for a change in a persons appearance, a new revolutionary method devised by a plastic surgeon in Hamburg. Germany, allows him or her to have it done during one afternoon.

A plastic material, the formula for which is secret, has been developed by the Frankfurt firm of Kulzer, makers of material for artificial teeth and other similar products. They have called it Palavit. In its first stage Palavit is a semi-liquid.

Loaded into a syringe it can be injected under the patients skin just where a correction is needed. Once it is under the skin the doctor still has time to mold the nose or whatever part of the body it may be according to the wishes of the patient or his own cosmetic judgment, before the inserted Palavit hardens to bonelike consistency.

It was just by accident that the doctor in Hamburg hit upon the idea to perform a plastic operation in such a bloodless, painless, scarlessand, above all rapidmanner. He had been experimenting with plastic operations during World War II, trying to rectify deformations suffered by soldiers on the field of battle.

He had started by inserting plastic splints made of Paladon, the predecessor of Palavit. The little splints that he used were, of course, rather hard, and in order to place them the doctor had to perform some slight surgery on the patient.

This worked very nicely but unfortunately always left a few scars, slight but visible. In the meantime Palavit was being developed as an aid to the Paladon splints and when the doctor saw how well and how rapidly the new liquid plastic substance hardened, he immediately got an idea. He would eliminate the splints altogether and inject the Palavit right into that part of the body which needed to be built up.

It took him some years, of course, to improve and refine the method to its present remarkable state, but it was well worth it, as the series of photographs on these two pages readily show. Indeed, it now takes a mere minute to give a person a new face and an entirely new personality. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    05/24/12 - High-fructose diet makes you stupid
KeelyNet New study shows that a high-fructose diet makes you stupid, significantly inhibiting your brain's ability to learn and remember.

"Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think," said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage."

While earlier research has revealed how fructose harms the body through its role in diabetes, obesity and fatty liver, this study is the first to uncover how the sweetener influences the brain. The UCLA team zeroed in on high-fructose corn syrup, an inexpensive liquid six times sweeter than cane sugar, that is commonly added to processed foods, including soft drinks, condiments, applesauce and baby food. The average American consumes more than 40 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"We're not talking about naturally occurring fructose in fruits, which also contain important antioxidants," explained Gomez-Pinilla, who is also a member of UCLA's Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center. "We're concerned about high-fructose corn syrup that is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative."

The researchers studied two groups of rats that each consumed a fructose solution as drinking water for six weeks. The second group also received omega-3 fatty acids in the form of flaxseed oil and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which protects against damage to the synapses the chemical connections between brain cells that enable memory and learning. "DHA is essential for synaptic function brain cells' ability to transmit signals to one another," Gomez-Pinilla said. "This is the mechanism that makes learning and memory possible. Our bodies can't produce enough DHA, so it must be supplemented through our diet."

The researchers found that after just six weeks on a high-fructose diet, brain function was significantly degraded. "The second group of rats navigated the maze much faster than the rats that did not receive omega-3 fatty acids," Gomez-Pinilla said. "The DHA-deprived animals were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity. Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats' ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier." - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/21/12 - Closer to the Clem Engine
    KeelyNet Years ago, in the early 1990s, we had an active group of networkers and experimenters in the Dallas area. One of our group was Albert Holman who was the first to describe to me the Richard Clem story. We met very late at a local Dennys I believe where Al told me this remarkable story. He said he knew a truck driver who had known Richard Clem and told him all about the engine. Al described how the engine was designed and I drew it up on a napkin with him correcting me along the way. From that napkin, I went home and wrote up the story and redrew the diagram using MSPAINT, then posted it on Keelynet which at that time was a BBS with about 2,000 members worldwide. I received the following amazing email which everyone needs to know about;

    Hello Mr. Decker

I have been reading about Richard Clem, and the Clem's engine on your web site.

Having designed many prototypes, I though about building this engine to test the Mr Clem's theory's.

In the past week I did some simple test of rotating drums, and did find that the clem's engine will increase pressure as the drum is rotating.

This was using no water pressure going into the drum, just a simple rotating drum that pull water upward into the inner walls.

I am now making a complete Clem engine design, and will show the complete build on YouTube.

This engine design, if it really worked, needs to be a open source design ASP!

I have the skills, and machines to build any prototype.

This design is so simple, that I wonder why nobody has made one?

Thanks for the information on your site, I'll keep you up to date. Here are some of my experiments with the Clem engine design.

The videos are simply excellent and this fellow clearly knows what he is doing. I particularly like that he wants to present it to the world as open source so that anyone can build, sell or buy at the very least a simple unit to power their car, home or whatever needs standalone power. - JWD - email from Tommey Reed - Permalink

05/21/12 - Dramatic pictures show how ocean life is dying

Oceans full of dead zones where nothing lives could only be 40 years away - and in some places that is already reality.

Imagine a sea full of slime, where only jellyfish flourish and fish have been slaughtered in their millions by stinging tentacles.

Imagine oceans full of dead zones where nothing lives, the water poisoned by fertilisers and human sewage.

Imagine seas so acidic the water damages seashells and oceans so over-fished that many of the species we take for granted no longer exist.

This apocalyptic vision is only 40 to 50 years away, according to The Ocean of Life, a new book by marine biologist Professor Callum Roberts.

And in some of our seas it is already a reality.

The oceans have changed more in the past 30 years than in all of human history before, says Prof Roberts, who advised the BBC on natural history series The Blue Planet.

In most places, the seas have lost upwards of 75 per cent of their megafauna large animals such as whales, dolphins, sharks, rays, and turtles as fishing and hunting spread in waves across the face of the planet.

For some species, like whitetip sharks, American sawfish and the once common skate, numbers are down as much as 99%.

In some cases, he says, there will be seas without fish and some marine turtles also face extinction.

Prof Roberts says some scientists are also worried about The Rise of Slime where jellyfish rule vast sea empires.

The crisis in the seas is caused by three main factors all of which are man made.

Firstly, the seas have helped us absorb a third of the carbon monoxide we have created since the Industrial Revolution by burning fossil fuels and replacing forests with cities. That has spared us much deeper consequences on land, but increased the acidity of seawater, with potentially disastrous consequences for sealife.

Secondly, the fertilisers we use and the sewage we create is drastically altering the chemistry of seawater.

Thirdly, we are catching fish a lot quicker than they can reproduce and we are destroying sea beds with huge dredgers.

I needed help. I wanted to look fresh for the wedding, said Kimberly Aschauer who was born in Kalamazoo and then raised in Belleville and New Boston in Wayne County, Michigan. Her son was about to get married and she wanted results fast.

She looked into what a mini-facelift would cost. The $5,000 price tag eliminated that idea.

I went home and got my makeup mirror, and I just couldnt stop thinking. I just wished there was a way that I could look like this affordably, said Aschauer. So Kimberly invented a way.

She fastened a piece of elastic between two small combs. She attached the combs to small braids on both sides of her face. Magicallywithout surgeryher face lifted.

Right before my very eyes when I was looking in the mirror, I watched ten years come off my face!

She called the invention Facelift Bungee. She came up with a clever way to market it, in a jar usually reserved for wrinkle creams. Then she started testing it on women.

The before and after pictures were impressive. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/21/12 - Dan Rather: Corporate Media 'Is In Bed With' Washington
Dan Rather slammed corporate media on Friday night, alleging that news coverage is guided by political interests and profits.

He went on to warn that everyone should be "concerned" about "the constant consolidation of media," saying that "no more than six" companies currently control 80% of the distribution of news.

"These large corporations, they have things they need from the power structure in Washington, whether it's Republican or Democrat, and of course the people in Washington have things they want the news to be reported," he said.

"To put it bluntly, very big business is in bed with very big government in Washington, and has more to do with what the average person sees, hears, and reads than most people know." - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/21/12 - Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease
KeelyNet As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries, today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.

Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake.

The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

It Is Not Working! - These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated -- it is quite simply your body's natural defence to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders.

However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process,a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. This repeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

Let me repeat that: The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet recommended for years by mainstream medicine.

What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.

What does all this have to do with inflammation? Blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range. Extra sugar molecules attach to a variety of proteins that in turn injure the blood vessel wall. This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation. When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels.

There is no escaping the fact that the more we consume prepared and processed foods, the more we trip the inflammation switch little by little each day. The human body cannot process, nor was it designed to consume, foods packed with sugars and soaked in omega-6 oils.

There is but one answer to quieting inflammation, and that is returning to foods closer to their natural state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as colorful fruits and vegetables. Cut down on or eliminate inflammation- causing omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil and the processed foods that are made from them.

One tablespoon of corn oil contains 7,280 mg of omega-6; soybean contains 6,940 mg. Instead, use olive oil or butter from grass-fed beef.

Animal fats contain less than 20% omega-6 and are much less likely to cause inflammation than the supposedly healthy oils labelled polyunsaturated. Forget the "science" that has been drummed into your head for decades. The science that saturated fat alone causes heart disease is non-existent. The science that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol is also very weak. Since we now know that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, the concern about saturated fat is even more absurd today.

What you can do is choose whole foods your grandmother served and not those your mom turned to as grocery store aisles filled with manufactured foods. By eliminating inflammatory foods and adding essential nutrients from fresh unprocessed food, you will reverse years of damage in your arteries and throughout your body from consuming the typical American diet. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/18/12 - Nikola Tesla Wasn't God And Thomas Edison Wasn't The Devil

The Oatmeal is a fantastic comic that I recommend that you make a habit of reading. However, even the greatest can go astray, and Im pained to admit that The Oatmeal has done so regarding someone I regard very highly, and thats Nikola Tesla.

Alas, The Oatmeal has fallen prey to Tesla idolatry, confusing his genius for godhood and of course, setting up the now all-too-common Edison as Teslas arch-villain narrative.

There are quite a few errors and misconceptions about both Tesla and Edison in this comic. But there ones that Ive seen before and are often repeated, so its worth the time, I think, to address some of the big ones.

Tesla Didnt Invent Alternating Current And He Wasnt A Major Power In The War Of The Currents.

Alternating current was developed in principle by Michael Faraday and in practice by Hippolyte Pixii in the early 19th century.

Practical devices employing AC in the medical world were developed before Tesla was even born.

Contemporaries of Tesla working for George Westinghouse developed practical methods of distributing AC power from power plants before Tesla came to work for Westinghouse.

Tesla himself actually studied the use of AC in college he had an electrical engineering degree. (For those interested, heres a nice, concise timeline of the development of alternating current.)

Now, did Tesla help refine AC? Yes. Did he make some key innovations that made it even more practical? Absolutely. No question about it. He had an intuitive understanding of electricity that I quite frankly envy. He could make it dance.

But was he indispensable to getting AC in place as the dominant means of electric power transmission? Almost certainly not.

George Westinghouse was the man who won the War of the Currents in the United States, and in Europe, AC won the wars almost before they started.

And the rabbit hole goes deeper if you look. Three HUGE plagiarists are Tesla, Edison and Einstein. I won't go into all the detail but one day will write it all up.

Tesla stole many of his ideas from John Keely and it so warped Tesla that he became obsessive/compulsive in later years in fear someone would put the timelines and 'discoveries' together to clearly show Keely preceded Tesla in several major discoveries.

Edison was by far the worst, setting up Menlo Park and hiring hundreds of experimenters and engineers to work on various projects which Edison claimed credit for, yet paying these poor fellows slave wages and slapping the Edison name on every patent with no mention of the true inventor.

Einstein stole ideas and concepts which had been around for DECADES and failed to give credit to the originators.

At least with Bill Gates, he sent out notices to the computing community that he planned to take all these standalone utilities and put them together into one coordinated system. Everyone said go for it and good luck, thus Microsoft and Windows were born.

Yet history paints Einstein as a singular genius whose ideas and theories were in fact lifted from others. - JWD - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/18/12 - Disease: the Mystery Solved
KeelyNet Your body is a system of tubes. Physically, you are nothing more and nothing less than tubes. All 76 trillion cells are tubes. They are spherical unless pressed together, but they are tubes.

They let things in, they let things out; groceries in, garbage out. Cells are filled with tubes.

For example, organelles are tubes and so is DNA. When these cellular tubes gather together and make larger and longer tubes. The largest tube is the alimentary tubes starting at the mouth and running through the body to the back door.

Organs, like muscles and bones, are a plexi or gathering of tubes. Bones are hollow tubes within tubes creating hardened matrices of tubes, while the heart is a mass of tubes that connect over 250,000 miles of circulatory tubes.

These, along with the liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, nerves and brain, all are tubes.

What if 95 percent of all disease mysteries, close to 10,000 of them,
    are really just blocked-clogged tubes?

Congestive (clogged) heart failure is clogged heart tubes. Si or no? Si! Asthma! Blocked lung tubes! Alzheimer's! Blocked brain tubes!

You might do well to ask, if you don't already know, what's blocking the tubes?

T-O=V which means Tubes - Obstruction = Vitality

So then what is the answer? The answer is plaque. Plaque is a substance that can coat the teeth; gather and clog the arteries, cover the brain and fill the lungs along with other destructiveness.

All 76 trillion cells of your body are tubes. The organelles inside the cells are tubes. DNA is tubes. Tubes that have problems are called disease. Tubes can be cut, smashed, burnt, become weak and balloon ... even burst.

Tubes though, mostly get clogged. Clogged tubes have 9,000 different names; cancer, congestive heart problems, memory loss, kidney dysfunction, diabetes, skin problems, etc. are simply the names of clogged tubes.

    What clogs the Tubes? PLAQUE!!

(Digital download of the total material in this fascinating ebook can be found at the link for $10.00 if you want to know more and the cure. - JWD)

    You can also remove plaque from the arteries as described at;

    5278189 - Rath/Pauling Lipoprotein Removal patent
on the USPTO server abstract and basic details

The recommended dosage was 4 to 6 GRAMS of Lysine to be taken with 4 to 6 GRAMS of vitamin C.

As it was explained to him, one of these substances breaks the lipoprotein from the circulation system walls, the other substance dissolves the lipoproteins so the body can easily remove them.

Note, most vitamins and such are measured in milligrams and I was assured it was in GRAMS, not Milligrams. This is inline with Dr. Pauling's long standing recommendation for megadoses (high quantities) of vitamin C.

Both Lysine and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can be purchased at any natural food store and most pharmacies in the herb/vitamin section.

In my own studies of what causes aging, disease and death, over time, it made sense to me that the body was a giant filter..everything we eat and drink passes into our body and leaves detritus. This detritus clogs up the operation of a healthy, pure body, causes a reduction of energy and ionotophoretic forces and can produce inflammation and faulty DNA replications, resulting in cancers and other malfunctioning organs.

As the years passed, I came across this similar idea in the claims of Sanford Bennett, who developed a form of isotonic exercises that acted like a squeezed sponge to expel this accumulated detritus from the body and thus restore health.

    Additionally, is the theory by Sanford Bennett;

everythingthatfollowsSanford Bennett - The Man Who Grew Young at 70 - In 1907 Sanford Bennett wrote a book called 'Exercising in Bed'. Bennett at the age of 50 had become an old man in poor health, suffering from a number of chronic complaints and many wrinkles. Despairing of relief from doctors and drugs he finally devised a series of some 35 different exercises to be done in bed before arising in the morning. After following them faithfully for years he had become, in all respects, a young man at 70. This was attested by medical examinations. His face had become smooth without a single wrinkle. His theory was that the body gets old through the accumulation of mineral deposits in the tissues, which finally become stiff and inelastic. The object of his exercises was to contract and then relax all the muscles and tissues to squeeze the mineral deposits out to be carried off in the blood stream. In 1912 he followed with another book called 'Old Age - Its Cause & Prevention'. If Bennett had not been killed by an accident when he was in his 80s he might have lived many more years. (you can download these books as pdf's from the Bennett site)

(Thanks to Ash for all the information he provided me about this view on health, quite fascinating. The $10 ebook provides a formula for a drink and health regimen that helps clear out the toxins and plaque from the body. - JWD) - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/18/12 - From MIT Inventor To Tea Party Leader
KeelyNet "In the midst of Congressional races around the country, one stands out to techies. Thomas Massie, an MIT whiz kid who pioneered touch-based interfaces and founded SensAble Technologies in the 1990s, is the favorite to win the Republican nomination in his Kentucky district next week.

SensAble was recently sold on the cheap, but in a new exclusive, Massie explains why he left the haptics firm years ago to lead a simpler life of farming, family, and guns lots of guns.

Along the way he built a solar-powered, off-the-grid house and became a local hero of the Tea Party.

Now Massie is leading the charge to get more engineers into politics, and if he wins, he could be a force to be reckoned with in Washington, DC."

People started telling Massie he should run for office. So in 2010, he ran for Judge-Executive of Lewis Countya position that is the executive and legislative head of the county government. He says he was swept up in a wave of enthusiasm over Rand Pauls Senate campaign out of Kentucky. Massie ended up beating the incumbent by a 2-1 margin in the Republican primary, and won the general election 3-1 over the Democratic candidate (which is typical for that county).

But things have not gone smoothly for Massie in officeand thats just how he wants it. When youre stalking waste within a government office, its like every rock that you turn over has a snake under it, he says. Massie has been targeting waste, fraud, and abuse, starting with questioning electric bills, phone bills, contracts, and fees for things that dont apply anymore.

Like the county being charged rental fees for property that had long been sold, paying for phone lines that had been disconnected for years, or buying stuff from a magistrates store.

He has upset a lot of entrenched powers, but has gained support from the masses for it. And he says that in his first nine months in office, he cut enough waste to pay his own salary for three years.

Interestingly, Massie also was inspired to run for office by something he heard during his MIT days. John Sununu, the former New Hampshire governor and White House Chief of Staff for George Bush, Sr., came to campus to speak (hes an MIT alum). He implored us as engineers to get involved in politics. Maybe that stuck in my brain for 20 years and popped out recently, says Massie.

Massie recalls Sununu saying, We need more engineers and fewer lawyers in politics. As Massie explains, Lawyers are taught to take a position, whether its right or wrong ideologically, and defend itto go collect facts to support it.

Whereas engineers are taught the inverse of that, theyre taught to collect facts and then come up with an answer based on the facts.

He said, Thats the kind of thought process we need more of in government. On the stump, thats what Im trying to convey, that we need more problem solvers in Washington, DC. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/18/12 - Engine Could Boost Fuel Economy by Half
Delphi, a major parts supplier to automakers, is developing an engine technology that could improve the fuel economy of gas-powered cars by 50 percent, potentially rivaling the performance of hybrid vehicles while costing less.

A test engine based on the technology is similar in some ways to a highly efficient diesel engine, but runs on gasoline.

In conventional gasoline-powered engines, a spark ignites a mixture of fuel and air. Diesel engines don't use a spark. Instead, they compress air until it's so hot that fuel injected into the combustion chamber soon ignites.

Several researchers have attempted to use compression ignition with gasoline, but it's proved challenging to control such engines, especially under the wide range of loads put on them as a car idles, accelerates, and cruises at various speeds.

Delphi's approach, which is called gasoline-direct-injection compression ignition, aims to overcome the problem by combining a collection of engine-operating strategies that make use of advanced fuel injection and air intake and exhaust controls, many of which are available on advanced engines today. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/15/12 - 12KW water fueled Generator from Pakistan
A mechanical engineer in Swat district has succeeded in inventing a power generator, which would use water as fuel after two decades of hard work on the project to produce cheap electricity.

Rehan Farooqi said he belonged to the family of mechanical engineers and his elders too had worked on various projects of public welfare. He maintained that he had managed to separate hydrogen gas from water to use it as fuel. It was my dream since childhood to invent such a generator that would run on water. Finally my dream has come true, Rehman said proudly.

He added the contraption, which was in its initial phase, could produce 12 kilowatts electricity by consuming only one litre of water and the power produced was enough for five hours use in a house. He said that the size of his invention was 4 by 4 feet and its price was affordable as he intended to help overcome the prevailing energy crisis in the country.

"I wanted to brighten the name of Pakistan and convey the message to the world that we are a talented and hardworking nation, he said.I have designed 12 kilowatt power generator that has been fitted with an engine of 1500 cubic centimeter, he said, adding that he had introduced the generator to provide cheaper electricity to the general public who have been bearing the brunt of power outages.

At least five megawatt electricity can be generated if this newly-designed generator is installed with the assistance of the government at different small projects in Swat, he said, adding that the product would be soon marketed. - Full Article Source - Permalink

Drug is made from borrachero tree, which is common in Colombia.

Scopolamine can be blown in the face of a passer-by on the street, and within minutes, that person is under the drugs effect - scopolamine is odourless and tasteless.

You can guide them wherever you want, he explained. Its like theyre a child.

Black said that one gram of Scopolamine is similar to a gram of cocaine, but later called it worse than anthrax. In high doses, it is lethal.

The tree common around Colombia, and is called the borrachero tree loosely translated as the 'get-you-drunk' tree.

Scopolamine is made from the Borrachero tree, which blooms with deceptively beautiful white and yellow flowers. It is said that Colombian mothers warn their children not to fall asleep under the tree, though the leafy green canopies and large yellow and white flowers seem appealing.

"VICE's Ryan Duffy went to Colombia to check out a strange and powerful drug called Scopolamine, also known as "The Devil's Breath." It's a substance so intense that it renders a person incapable of exercising free will. The first few days in the country were a harrowing montage of freaked-out dealers and unimaginable horror stories about Scopolamine. After meeting only a few people with firsthand experience, the story took a far darker turn than we ever could have imagined." - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/15/12 - New Planet Found in Our Solar System?
An as yet undiscovered planet might be orbiting at the dark fringes of the solar system, according to new research.

Too far out to be easily spotted by telescopes, the potential unseen planet appears to be making its presence felt by disturbing the orbits of so-called Kuiper belt objects, said Rodney Gomes, an astronomer at the National Observatory of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.

What's intriguing, Gomes said, is that, according to his new calculations, about a half dozen Kuiper belt objectsincluding the remote body known as Sednaare in strange orbits compared to where they should be, based on existing solar system models. (Related: "Pluto Neighbor Gets Downsized.")

The objects' unexpected orbits have a few possible explanations, said Gomes, who presented his findings Tuesday at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Timberline Lodge, Oregon.

"But I think the easiest one is a planetary-mass solar companion"a planet that orbits very far out from the sun but that's massive enough to be having gravitational effects on Kuiper belt objects.

For the new work, Gomes analyzed the orbits of 92 Kuiper belt objects, then compared his results to computer models of how the bodies should be distributed, with and without an additional planet.

If there's no distant world, Gomes concludes, the models don't produce the highly elongated orbits we see for six of the objects.

How big exactly the planetary body might be isn't clear, but there are a lot of possibilities, Gomes added.

Based on his calculations, Gomes thinks a Neptune-size world, about four times bigger than Earth, orbiting 140 billion miles (225 billion kilometers) away from the sunabout 1,500 times farther than Earthwould do the trick.

But so would a Mars-size objectroughly half Earth's sizein a highly elongated orbit that would occasionally bring the body sweeping to within 5 billion miles (8 billion kilometers) of the sun.

Gomes speculates that the mystery object could be a rogue planet that was kicked out of its own star system and later captured by the sun's gravity. (See "'Nomad' Planets More Common Than Thought, May Orbit Black Holes.")

Or the putative planet could have formed closer to our sun, only to be cast outward by gravitational encounters with other planets. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/12/12 - Japanese 'culinary experiment' with ELECTRIFIED food
Researchers have created a gastronomic twist that might put off even the most adventurous foodie - electric food.

A team put a wire with an electric current into some lemonade to make it seem less sugary and more salty.

They have also done the same with cubes of cheese, although in taste tests one reviewer accidentally bit the wire and got a shock. The Japanese researchers hope that electric food might be used to make salt heavy foods less unhealthy.

This would mean those with diabetes or heart disease could still be able to enjoy their favourite foods because they are not so bad for them.

The electric food was developed by Meiji University student Hiromi Nakamura who said that as more electricity generates a deeper salt taste it could have a range of dietary applications.

He also suggested that it could be used for taste sharing as the electronic data from a particular taste is recorded on his equipment and could be recreated at a later date.

Electricity has no nutritional value and no calories but does not change the chemical make-up of the food, he added.

Mr Nakamuras experiment is currently a research project and does not yet have a commercial backer. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/12/12 - Did the Germans launch a crewed rocket into space in 1933?
KeelyNet On October 29, 1933, the London Sunday Referee published a report from Rugen, an island in the Baltic Sea, just off the coast of Germany. Someone named Otto Fischer had flown inside a 24-foot steel rocket, to an altitude of six miles. Were the Germans really testing out a rocket that could carry people, nearly three decades before Yuri Gagarin?

Reports said that Otto was the brother of the rocket's designer, Bruno Fischer. The flight had been made in total secrecy because of a fatal attempt at a launch the previous year, combined with the fact that the flight had been made under the auspices of the Reichswehr, the German War Ministry. The rocket, the Referee reported, had been constructed in the town of Barmbeck, near Hamburg, and transported to Rgen.

This all sounds pretty plausible, especially given all the matter-of-fact details combined with the fact that the Germans were in fact hotly pursuing rocket propulsion at the time. Added to this was the fact that Bruno Fischer really existed and was busily at work designing rockets. And in fact, the report caused a considerable fuss at the time it appeared.

The American Rocket Society, the Cleveland Rocket Society, the Austrian Rocket Society, the British Interplanetary Society, GIRD in the Soviet Union were all besieged for information about the amazing rocket flight.

The purpose of the rocket flight, they'd discovered, was to prove: that we are not living on the outside surface of the earth, but rather on the inside surface of a hollow sphere! This was the Hohlweltlehre, or Hollow Earth Doctrine, of Peter Bender that flourished in the anticultural Nazi movement (just as did the equally insane Welteislehre, or World Ice Theory, of Hrbiger, that had such a profound influence upon rocket car inventor Max Valier and German sci fi author Otto Willi Gail).

Franz Mengering, an engineer working for the city of Magdeburg, had hit upon the idea that the hollow earth theory could be proved, if a rocket launched vertically were to land in the antipodes. That is, traveling in a line straight up it would eventually land in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere southeast of New Zealand, which, according to the theory, was directly above Germany.

To their credit, the city officials didn't accept the hollow Earth argument, but instead suggested making the rocket a man-carrying one, figuring it would be a terrific publicity stunt for the town. Nebel agreed that he could build such a rocket and have it ready to launch by June 11, 1933. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/12/12 - Disney Research Can Turn Nearly Any Surface Into a Touch Screen
"Remember that scene in Fantasia where Mickey turns all the brooms into an army of workers? Well, Disney isn't quite there, yet.

But scientists with the company's research lab at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh have been able to turn virtually any surface, including liquid water and the human body, into a multi-touch interface.

The new system is called Touch, and it is as awesome as it sounds."

Touch proposes a novel Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing technique that can not only detect a touch event, but also recognize complex configurations of the human hands and body.

Such contextual information significantly enhances touch interaction in a broad range of applications, from conventional touchscreens to unique contexts and materials.

For example, in our explorations we add touch and gesture sensitivity to the human body and liquids. We demonstrate the rich capabilities of Touch with five example setups from different application domains and conduct experimental studies that show gesture classification accuracies of 99% are achievable with our technology. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/12/12 - Defying gravity for new user interfaces
[Jinha Lee] at the MIT Media Lab created a new interface allowing new ways to modify and play with 3D objects. Its called ZeroN, and its nothing short of a futuristic device straight out of Star Trek.

ZeroN is simply a platform for levitating a small spherical permanent magnet in 3D space. It does this by mounting a hall effect sensor on an electromagnet.

The hall sensor measure the strength of the magnetic field of the ball every few milliseconds and keeps the spherical magnet levitated. To move the object in 3D space, a few webcams track the ball over the platform and tell the electromagnet to move on a CNC-like x y table.

[Jinha] showed off a lot of cool stuff that is possible with the ZeroN; ping-pong is by far the coolest implementation, but its also possible to use the magnetic sphere to demonstrate n-body gravity or as a camera flying around a digital scene. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/12/12 - Increasing Energy with the Mexistim
KeelyNetIs it possible to pump up the body energy level and help the body remove toxins with a machine that uses batteries to 'charge' a wirescreen that you place on or under your body? Many report this is what the Mexistim does for them, especially when they sleep on top of a pad or blanket placed over a large wirescreen. Just 10 D cell batteries wired to provide 3vdc. Then change polarity approximately every 15 minutes. That's all there is to it, yet something happens with many who try it, most notably reports of increased energy and more restful sleep. Two versions available for regular users or for experimentalists or even doctors who have bought the Universal model.

    Based on Lee Crocks 2nd version of the 'Energy Cleaner'. The 2nd version was used with good results on over 10,000 people according to the inventor. Lee claimed his 'energy cleaner' assists the body to purge toxins from the cells. Each person's body is different with a constantly changing acid and alkali balance, varying daily stresses and other factors which affect healing. We are basically living filters which trap all kinds of toxins and noxious materials from the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe and which settle in our tissues to bring about a variety of illnesses, cancer and even organ failure. In my case, it has been quite beneficial for;

    KeelyNet 1) Restful, sound sleep
    2) Increased red cell count
    3) Elimination of seasonal allergies
    4) Increased overall energy
    5) No headaches
    6) No stomach pains or aches
    7) No muscle pains
    8) Weight loss
    9) Increase urination
    10) Lighter color, less smelly urine

If what Lee and many of us believe, that toxins in the cells can cause a variety of illnesses and symptoms, then anything that might help the body to remove those toxins would also remove the irritant and allow the body to heal itself. - Order Mexistim Here and here is the original article which describes how it came to be, how it is thought to work and shows a wiring diagram so you can build and try it for yourself. - Permalink

Two fortune tellers are being investigated, after the Romanian police uncovered that they have utilized some extraordinary help in their clairvoyant acts.

The pair used information collected from internet search and social networks to gain the trust of their customers, claiming that they could see their personal data through their crystal ball.

05/09/12 - How you can use Jury Nullification to fight unjust laws?
Jury nullification occurs when a jury returns a verdict of "Not Guilty" despite its belief that the defendant is guilty of the violation charged. The jury in effect nullifies a law that it believes is either immoral or wrongly applied to the defendant whose fate they are charged with deciding.

Judges have worried that informing jurors of their power to nullify will lead to jury anarchy, with jurors following their own sympathies. They suggest that informing of the power to nullify will increase the number of hung juries.

Some judges have argued that informing jurors of their power to nullify places too much weight on their shoulders--that is easier on jurors to simply decide facts, not the complex issues that may be presented in decisions about the morality or appropriateness of laws.

On the other hand, jury nullification provides an important mechanism for feedback. Jurors sometimes use nullification to send messages to prosecutors about misplaced enforcement priorities or what they see as harassing or abusive prosecutions. Jury nullification prevents our criminal justice system from becoming too rigid--it provides some play in the joints for justice, if jurors use their power wisely.

    Doug Stanhope has a few recommendations for cases where a 'not guilty' should be applied to nullify bogus charges or over strict laws;

    1) - IRS and tax cases
    2) - bank foreclosure
    3) - non-violent 'crimes' including drugs
    4) - drug possession and/or use
    5) - prostitution and sex 'crimes' (sodomy, etc.)
    6) - victimless crimes
    7) - entrapment or government generated charges that did not come from a citizen plaintiff
    8) - .09 dui
    9) - anything that is none of your or the governments business
    10) - cases which overstep the law or authority to unfairly punish - Full Article Source - Permalink

    05/09/12 - Volkswagen Hover Car
The Volkswagen hover car is a product of the "People's Car Project" in China, which called upon customers to contribute design ideas for Volkswagen's model of the future.

The crowd-sourcing initiative debuted in China last year and, to date, has inspired 33 million website visitors to submit 119,000 ideas.

The hovercraft, as seen in the concept video above, uses electromagnetic levitation to float along its own grid above the regular road network; distance sensors keep the craft from colliding with other vehicles. The disc-shaped pod seats two people and is controlled by a joystick that offers amazing maneuverability. The car can move both back-and-forth and side-to-side and can even spin on an axis. To top it off, the concept car produces zero emissions. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/09/12 - 6 reasons why working prototypes attract investors
A prototype doesn't need to look great, or be built to scale, but it had better accurately translate your vision into something real and tangible. For less tangible products, like software, it should simulate the look and feel of the final product on relevant base hardware. Here are some key objectives to keep in mind when designing your prototype to make it attractive to investors:

    1. Validate the customer need and opportunity. I always hate it when I see startups invest millions of dollars in technology before they validate their ideas in the market, only to find that customers seem to be looking for something slightly different. Test your idea early in a form that is easy and inexpensive to modify.

    2. Demonstrate to you and your team that your idea is implementable. No matter how strong your vision and theory, you won't know for sure until you see it, that it really works. Even the best ideas often fail. Even when it works, key members of your team may not understand it all until they can touch and feel it.

    3. Leverage the technology to change directions as needed. In these days of rapid change, almost every startup has to adapt its solution, business model, or target customer. A pre-production prototype will allow you to be adaptive without dire consequences.

    4. Convince potential investors to take you seriously. Venture capitalists and angels are all about reducing risk. Per the above points, if you have a validated a working prototype, investment risks are dramatically reduced. These days, if you don't have a proven prototype, investors probably won't even talk to you.

    5. Early start on testing performance, materials and quality. Working with the prototype will help you determine the best materials, like metal versus plastic, to assure acceptable performance and durability. Don't wait for the final production model to find out that your product has a weak link in one of the common environments.

    6. Basis for working with vendors to finalize costs, manufacturing, and marketing. After the market and product have been validated, the real challenge comes. You need to find vendors who can deliver in less cost and time than competitors, and build distribution and support channels. A prototype is the three-dimensional version of your vision. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/09/12 - Invention removes mercury from fish
KeelyNet The Marinade Express is a countertop vacuum tumbler developed by Ned Thornton of Janesville. The machine is used to remove contaminants from and add flavoring to food.

A recent breakthrough for the company was working with John Ejnik, an assistant professor of chemistry at UW-Whitewater, Thornton said. Ejnik researched removing mercury from fish using the Marinade Express.

When he considered warnings posted along some state lakeshores limiting the amount of fish people should eat, Thornton saw an opportunity for a smaller, home model.

Chronic exposure to mercury results in memory loss, speech difficulties, troubles with vision, and cardiovascular problems in adults. Children and the unborn exposed to mercury can face neurological damage that impairs development, leads to low intelligence and inhibits school performance.

"Mercury is distributed throughout a fish's muscle tissue. The only way to reduce mercury intake is to reduce the amount of contaminated fish you eat."

Thornton and Ejnik believe they have found another way to reduce mercury intake.

Additional research is necessary to expand the versatility of the tumbler.

"We already know the process stops the formation of free radicals prior to cooking and removes other toxins, but we would like UW-Whitewater to do a complete research analysis of the most efficient ways to achieve this using the Marinade Express," Thornton said. "Preliminary research shows that our process removes many contaminants from food, including those that could cause cancer."

Free radicals attack normal cells, causing damage that increases with age. Heart disease and cancer are associated with damage caused by free radicals. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/06/12 - The United States Budget Dilemma
Alarming! Washington's dilemma. Soaring debt and a budget congress can't balance! This video will explain WHY. Every person in AMERICA should watch this video! (Thanks to Norman Wootan for the headsup. - JWD)

WE HAVE TRIPLED THE MONEY SUPPLY IN THE LAST FEW YEARS! To fix this problem entitlements must pretty much go away...cut government by more than 50%...go to a flat tax...and much more...people better get prepared to live a 1930s lifestyle because its coming!

If you made $100,000 a year you'd try to spend $1,000,000. This is why Democrats shouldn't be allowed near the checkbook. They think like 5 year olds in a candy store GIMME GIMME GIMME without any thought as to who pays for the candy. get a grip...

In my 1997 book "Preparing For The Worst," I warned that debt would be our downfall. Debt is the ultimate form of bondage. You can argue economics all you want; but you can't spend more than you make. This can't be stopped. No politician will cut entitlements, so like a giant snowball rolling downhill it will only get bigger...until it crashes. The question is not "If," it's "When?" My advice: Build an Ark...a place of refuge...because it's going to get worse, a lot worse, before it gets better.

Limited liability corporations, family trusts, holding companies, offshore enterprises. While these tax shelters for rich Americans are legal, they also deprive the U.S. Treasury of scores of billions each year, increasing the relative burden on less-affluent taxpayers. The exploitation of these breaks demands public attention!!

I agree we should cut government spending and entitlements. Let's start with cutting the salaries, perks, benefits, retirement plans and entitlements of the members of congress! The group of people that treat themselves like royalty and vote themselves pay raises and increased benefits with no oversight. They are the "public servants" but they don't serve, they RULE.

Mismanagement got us here. I have never seen anything not fixable yet. It is time to demand a reasonable budget effort then start the painful process of cutting expenditures government wages is the place to start. Legislators should set an example by reducing expenditures. The UN lives off us fire them send their leech sucking reps home. Try one year without giving foreign assistance; sorry but it has to be done. Call all troops home. Put them on the borders. Send all illegals home.

Ron Paul is the only presidential candidate who is addressing this problem in a realistic manner.

This is what happens when a country outsources everything overseas, gives free money to those who refuse to get a job, that riot when they don't get the nipple. The creation of useless non-productive federal agencies tied to the Code of Federal Regulations, year after year, does even more damage. We are not in Kansas anymore.

Totally agree my friend. The answer lies in neither Party... at this stage there is no practical solution to the problem. First, the problem has to be identified... and the answer is Congress!!!! a totally corrupt Congress. This fact is undeniable.... these people are bought and paid for.... and have been for years. They and only THEY have the purse strings.?

We have spent way more money than we bring in for years. When bama took office our economy was in shambles and they should have cut way back on spending but we did the opposite, Big Gov't. borrowing more money. Inflation is going to hit hard and the dollar bubble will pop.

"A house divided against itself cannot stand" Our federal government divides us by economic, social and racial lines ensuring that while we fight amongst ourselves, they maintain their power. I believe it would scare the pants off of Washington insiders if we stopped paying attention to what divides all of us and turned all our eyes toward and against them.

We seriously need to revise tax codes (remove loopholes) or go with flat tax. Then review Medicare, Medicaid and pensions for fraud - there is a LOT of it and people are receiving benefits who should never ever get a check. Smaller federal government, as identified in the Constitution, more oversight at the state level with stiff penalties for fraud. But to start, we need to kick out this administration. No change at the top? No change in your pocket.

Vote Ron Paul if you actually want to see an end to deficit spending.

Dems want more taxes, GOP wants less government -- the budget will NEVER BE BALANCED the way the country is going. The ONLY solution is a FAIR TAX and an iron-clad balanced budget amendment. Politicians know this but are all too cowardly to propose it. A fair tax can easily be adjusted to make receipts match expenditures. Also, every expenditure needs to have a corresponding payment plan, so Dems can't just spend money they don't have. A fair tax taxes the rich every time they buy something.

We spend almost a trillion dollars a year in food stamps. Instead of feeding millions of ghetto rats and drug dealers Alaskan crab legs and filet mignons on OUR dime, make them for for the grub like the rest of us. There ya go, I fixed a trillion dollars of it. Of course the votes bought with food stamps will be gone. Poor Democrats. By the way, we actually PAY into social security, so it's an insult to lump it in with the bums on welfare.

Excellent video. Well researched and expertly presented. However, disagree with the conclusion. The politicians democan and republicrat (as there is no difference between them) created these massive irreversible debt problems by bailing out banksters, borrowing from foreign countries, waging illegal wars and throwing free bribe money to voters. Any citizen accepting responsibility for their actions condones their crimes against humanity. Those responsible must be held accountable.

The deeply flawed notion that "government can't cut entitlements or there will be riots in the streets" is simply made up - a purely fictitious invention to terrorize the people into accepting insane policies that will result in the destruction of our country. To understand what is happening, why it is happening and who is driving it, read "The Creature From Jekyll Island" by Edward Griffin.

I agree with one thing the guy says, Government Pensions cost as much as Social Security and Medicare together. Plus, the VA and Military Pensions cost another $125 Billion a year. At MilitaryCom, there is an article today from Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) calling for Military TRICARE funding to be cut. The Constitution promised to pay for combat veteran's healthcare during wars, not their entire familes for the rest of their lives. Cut Gov and Mil Pensions. BTW, I'm a Vietnam Vet.

This is a crock. Doesn't say one word about expenses for supporting illegals or money given to foreign governments or getting people off unemployment and back to work so they can pay taxes. People have paid into social security and medicare all their working years so this is not a give away. Unmarried welfare mothers with 8 or 9 kids drawing SSI for each kid is a give away program. I'm still trying to figure out how NAFTA helped me and all the other unemployed people.

Half of the country does not pay federal income tax, and about 70% of the people draw some type of government benefit. Looking at IRS data, those making over 380,000 pay 40% of all taxes collected. Those making under 33,000 a years, pay little to no tax. If you make less 25,000 a year, and have 4 kids, you pay no taxes, but receive a government check, of 1000, per kid, from the child earned income tax credit. People paying no taxes receiving tax return checks?....go figure.

WRONG, Did you not even watch the video? IT IS THE ENTITLEMENTS that are killing us. We are putting money into a dead end for the poor CONTRIBUTE NOTHING to society while they sit home on their asses, (make babies) and (drink and) do drugs. We need to STOP TAKING money away from the private sector, which creates wealth, and stop giving it to dead beats. If the Gov. let us keep more of our money, then the non-profits could deal with the poor. Gov generosity is killing us.

No problem. Any average person on the street could solve this. It is time for a little isolationism and no more foreign aid and that includes illegal aliens in this country now. The USA has ample resources to take care of it's own for a very long time. The globalists have the USA in their sights and will not stop until they break the USA's back. It can be stopped with plain old common sense, but there appears to be a shortage of this now days.. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/06/12 - Magnetic Polar Shifts Causing Massive Global Superstorms
Superstorms can also cause certain societies, cultures or whole countries to collapse. Others may go to war with each other.

Forget about global warmingman-made or naturalwhat drives planetary weather patterns is the climate and what drives the climate is the sun's magnetosphere and its electromagnetic interaction with a planet's own magnetic field.

When the field shifts, when it fluctuates, when it goes into flux and begins to become unstable anything can happen. And what normally happens is that all hell breaks loose. Magnetic polar shifts have occurred many times in Earth's history. It's happening again now to every planet in the solar system including Earth.

The magnetic field drives weather to a significant degree and when that field starts migrating superstorms start erupting. The superstorms have arrived A Danish study published in the scientific journal Geology, found strong correlation between climate change, weather patterns and the magnetic field.

"The earth's climate has been significantly affected by the planet's magnetic field, according to a Danish study published Monday that could challenge the notion that human emissions are responsible for global warming. "'Our results show a strong correlation between the strength of the earth's magnetic field and the amount of precipitation in the tropics,' one of the two Danish geophysicists behind the study, Mads Faurschou Knudsen of the geology department at Aarhus University in western Denmark, told the Videnskab journal.

"He and his colleague Peter Riisager, of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), compared a reconstruction of the prehistoric magnetic field 5,000 years ago based on data drawn from stalagmites and stalactites found in China and Oman." In the scientific paper "Midday magnetopause shifts earthward of geosynchronous orbit during geomagnetic superstorms with Dst = -300 nT" the magnetic intensity of solar storms impacting Earth can intensify the effects of the polar shift and also speed up the frequency of the emerging superstorms. Pole reversal may also be initiating new Ice Age. (Thanks to Joel McClain for the headsup. - JWD) - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/06/12 - Futuristic Hydrogel to Grow Food on Desert Sand
KeelyNet Substituting an industrially produced hydrogel for soil makes it possible to farm on sterile desert sand. Similarly to Pink LEDs Grow Future Food with 90% Less Water, this amazing sci fi technology allows the farming of the desert, with 80 percent less water than needed in traditional farming.

The hydrogel technology is the invention of Waseda University Visiting Professor Yuichi Mori, who has years of experience in developing polymeric membranes for use in medical technologies such as blood purification and oxygen enrichment.

His hydrogel membranebased plant cultivation technology has a unique membrane technology [PDF]. The simple system is much more portable than traditional hydroponics.

Mori has launched a company, Mebiol, to commercialize the technology, which solves many of the farming problems found in deserts, the age-old agricultural problems due to the unpredictability of water supplies. The plants grow on a thin hydrophilic film made of hydrogel, which allows the passage of water and nutrients such as various ions, amino acids and sugars but not bacteria, fungi and viruses. This protects plants from diseases; use of pesticide is minimized.

The membrane looks like a plastic sheet allows for no-soil and low-soil farming, with the water and fertilizer separate from the plants roots. The roots remain dry while drawing water and nutrients from below the membrane, and oxygen from the air. Lettuce and other leaf vegetables can be grown with no soil.

Hydrogels are networks of hydrophilic (which means water-loving) polymer chains, sometimes found as a colloidal gel in which water is the dispersion medium. The hydrogel membrane in the Imec technology is only microns thick. Other formulations of hydrogels have uses in medical treatment for blood purification and oxygen enrichment, and in water treatment for desalination and purification.

In agriculture use, along with eliminating the soil contamination that affects productivity and the quality of crops, one of the interesting side effects is that the plants synthesize a lot of sugar. The water stress the Imec membrane creates induces crops like tomatoes to synthesize large amounts of sugar, lycopene and other beneficial elements, leading to greater sweetness and higher nutritional value.

After testing the technology successfully in Dubai, one of the worlds most inhospitable environments for agriculture, the Sahara could be next.

And once he makes the desert bloom, Dr Mori believes that even less likely conditions could be roped in for producing crops for a rapidly growing world population.

The technology will even allow cultivation on ice or concrete! - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/06/12 - 13-Year-Old CEO Who Invented A Cure For Hiccups
KeelyNet Kievman is preparing to launch her product, the Hiccupop, a hiccup-stopping lollipop of her own invention. She has a patent pending, financial backers, and a team of business consultants (in training). Here's her story:

What are Hiccupops? Kievman got the idea after trying to tame a stubborn bout of hiccups two years ago by using any home remedy she came upon: Drinking saltwater, sipping water out of an upside-down cup, eating spoonfuls of sugar, slurping pickle juice.

After testing about 100 folk remedies, Kievman picked three of her favorites sugar, apple cider vinegar, and lollipops and combined them. I'm still "tweaking the taste," she tells The New York Times, but the combination of ingredients "triggers a set of nerves in your throat and mouth that are responsible for the hiccup reflex arc...

It basically over-stimulates those nerves and cancels out the message to hiccup."

Kievman has to find a manufacturer for her lollipops, then she has the team of business grad student consultants until August. And "what about product testing?" says Rich Maloof at MSN Living.

"Imagine the boardrooms of angel investors, where suited millionaires sit patiently around a conference table for hours, a box of lollipops on the table, just waiting for someone to get a case of the hiccups."

Kievman's goal is to make Hiccupops "a staple in drug stores [and] nurse's offices," she tells Tech Cocktail. But perhaps more pressingly, she adds, "I have recently been applying to high schools." - Full Article Source - Permalink

Whatever it is, the Volta Volare aeronautics company of Portland, Oregon says the plane can travel 300 miles on battery power, then a 1.5-liter gasoline engine engages and extends the plane's range to 1,000 miles.

The company sees the plane being attractive for its low cost of operation and its environmental friendliness. Aviation gasoline is typically leaded fuel, which has been gone from motor vehicle fuel since the 1980s.

On a 200-mile trip in a comparable four-passenger gas-engine private plane, you'd burn $80 worth of avgas, while the electricity to carry the GT4 200 miles would cost only $20 nice savings, but perhaps a little inconsequential when the plane itself is expected to cost around $500,000. Testing begins this spring on the Volta Volare GT4."

Theres also a 23-gallon gas tank. The gas engine kicks in when battery power falls to 25%.

Volta Volare says low maintenance costs will be a big attraction. The gas engine on a private plane needs an annual inspection that could cost several thousand dollars. In comparison, the GT4 could get by with a simple diagnostic checkup by laptop: Just plug in a USB cable to the electric motor.

(Give or take the costs of checking the gasoline engine the GT4 has as well as the electric motor.)

There hasnt been much discussion of the planes actual list price, but its carbon fiber fuselage cant be cheap. Its specifications, including a 160-knot cruising speed (184 mph), place it a level higher than the basic Cessna 182 four-passenger private plane that cruises at around 150 mph. Some of the electricity-not-gasoline savings are nice but still dwarfed by the purchase price that is likely to be over $500,000.

Still, if the Volta Volare comes anywhere near the claimed 300-mile range, thats a pretty impressive feat from a plane running on what is effectively 236 largish laptop batteries. (At almost 4 pounds per battery, each battery is equal to 3-4 typical laptop batteries.) - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/03/12 - 1 in 5 drivers would spend $3,000 to add self-driving to their next car
Judging from what Google has been saying to automakers, self-driving cars are still millions of test miles away from actually making it to showrooms, but survey results indicate some American drivers are ready to pay for the technology today.

A new survey from J.D. Power and Associates says that 20 percent of vehicle owners tested either "definitely would" or "probably would" spend $3,000 to add fully-autonomous self-driving technology to their next vehicle.

Call us crazy, but in the US, at the $16.57 median hourly wage being able to get work done during your half-hour commute would be worth about $4,140 a year, which would make an extra $3,000 for autonomous driving a steal. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/03/12 - Philips unveils poleless street lighting system
A group of people including city planners and architects recently put a challenge to Dutch electronics company Philips: design an outdoor lighting system that helps to declutter our streets. The result was FreeStreet, a street lighting system that does away with vertical streetlight poles in favor of horizontally-strung cables that have clusters of LED lights built into them. The system won its designers a 2011 Dutch Design Award, and is available for use in Europe as of this month.

The cables are suspended to run parallel to the street that theyre lighting, and must be electrically sourced to the streetfront facade every 100 meters (328 feet) according to Philips, the figure for most other suspended systems is closer to about every 20 meters (66 feet). Additionally, FreeStreet is said to be up to 40 percent more energy efficient than traditional sodium street lighting. That said, no figures area available concerning how its light output compares.

The four-bulb LED clusters themselves are designed to emulate drops of fluid along the cable, in that they are smoothly integrated into it, as opposed to simply being clamped on. This feature is intended to make the system less visually obtrusive ... and while it could be argued that FreeStreet does indeed eliminate the vertical clutter of streetlight poles, along with freeing up the sidewalk space that they occupy, it looks like it does contribute somewhat to the overhead clutter of power and/or trolley lines. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/03/12 - Former MakerBot COO creates the worlds first $500 3D printer
Cervantes and his team are working on the first $500 3D printer, a device known as the Solidoodle. At the risk of sounding cliche, what youre witnessing in the video is truly game-changing; the Solidoodle is a significant step towards making 3D printing accessible to the average consumer.

Cervantes took a look at this fact and decided it was one of the last barriers to break through to allow the technology to move forward through crowd-sourced innovation. He decided that he could design a low-cost 3D printer for the masses and help to get a device in as many peoples hands as possible, and with that came the birth of the Solidoodle. Striking out on his own, using his personal bank account, Cervantes formed his new company and gathered a team of six like-minded engineers to begin prototyping his vision.

By using an Arduino and open-source software for the 3D modeling the Solidoodle team was able to construct a printing device that makes 6x6x6-inch models out of melted plastic filament. While thats not an very large work space, its certainly enough to let you express your imagination.

The printing is done by one extrusion head working from the map provided by the software, creating each model layer-by-layer, as it typical with todays 3D printers. For building materials the company currently recommends using ABS filament, but is working on adapting the device to make use of polylactic acid based or PLA filament. The upside to using PLA is that its made from corn, which of course is available in abundance in America. Its conceivable that as the 3D printing industry grows, you could be replenishing your filament supply with locally grown corn.

The Solidoodle looks to be a solidly made piece of equipment. This is reinforced by Cervantes claim that a 200-pound person could stand on top of the device while its printing and not cause any damage.

To answer the big question how could the Solidoodle base model only cost $499?

We didnt cut corners if thats what youre asking, Cervantes said when I asked him, We simply started with a clean sheet of paper when it came to designing an affordable 3D printer, and built it from the ground up. We stripped away anything that we didnt think was necessary to create a machine that does one thing: make 3D prints.

Cervantes went on to talk about how he and his team leveraged the knowledge and experience from their collective backgrounds to slim down the production process to avoid muddying the waters when it came to quality components. What was key for the project was the fact that the whole team was committed to the simple vision of creating a printing device for the masses, rather than just the enthusiasts. - Full Article Source - Permalink

05/03/12 - Why Indians Would Keep Their Hair Long

Our culture leads people to believe that hair style is a matter of personal preference, that hair style is a matter of fashion and/or convenience, and that how people wear their hair is simply a cosmetic issue.

Back in the Vietnam war however, an entirely different picture emerged, one that has been carefully covered up and hidden from public view.

In the early nineties, Sally [name changed to protect privacy] was married to a licensed psychologist who worked at a VA Medical hospital. He worked with combat veterans with PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Most of them had served in Vietnam.

Sally said, "I remember clearly an evening when my husband came back to our apartment on Doctor's Circle carrying a thick official looking folder in his hands. Inside were hundreds of pages of certain studies commissioned by the government. He was in shock from the contents. What he read in those documents completely changed his life. From that moment on my conservative middle of the road husband grew his hair and beard and never cut them again. What is more, the VA Medical center let him do it, and other very conservative men in the staff followed his example.

As I read the documents, I learned why. It seems that during the Vietnam War special forces in the war department had sent undercover experts to comb American Indian Reservations looking for talented scouts, for tough young men trained to move stealthily through rough terrain. They were especially looking for men with outstanding, almost supernatural, tracking abilities. Before being approached, these carefully selected men were extensively documented as experts in tracking and survival.

When questioned about their failure to perform as expected, the older recruits replied consistently that when they received their required military haircuts, they could no longer 'sense' the enemy, they could no longer access a 'sixth sense', their 'intuition' no longer was reliable, they couldn't 'read' subtle signs as well or access subtle extrasensory information.

So the testing institute recruited more Indian trackers, let them keep their long hair, and tested them in multiple areas. Then they would pair two men together who had received the same scores on all the tests. They would let one man in the pair keep his hair long, and gave the other man a military haircut. Then the two men retook the tests.

Time after time the man with long hair kept making high scores. Time after time, the man with the short hair failed the tests in which he had previously scored high scores.

Hair is an extension of the nervous system, it can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly evolved 'feelers' or 'antennae' that transmit vast amounts of important information to the brain stem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.

Not only does hair in people, including facial hair in men, provide an information highway reaching the brain, hair also emits energy, the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain into the outer environment. This has been seen in Kirlian photography when a person is photographed with long hair and then rephotographed after the hair is cut.

When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in numbing-out.

Cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It is also a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds. It contributes to sexual frustration. - Full Article Source - Permalink

KeelyNet BBS Files w/bonus PDF of 'Keely and his Discoveries'
KeelyNet Finally, I've gotten around to compiling all the files (almost 1,000 - about 20MB and lots of work doing it) from the original KeelyNet BBS into a form you can easily navigate and read using your browser, ideally Firefox but it does work with IE. Most of these files are extremely targeted, interesting and informative, I had forgotten just how much but now you can have the complete organized, categorized set, not just sprinklings from around the web. They will keep you reading for weeks if not longer and give you clues and insights into many subjects and new ideas for investigation and research. IN ADDITION, I am including as a bonus gift, the book (in PDF form) that started it all for me, 'Keely and his Discoveries - Aerial Navigation' which includes the analysis of Keely's discoveries by Dr. Daniel G. Brinton. This 407 page eBook alone is worth the price of the KeelyNet BBS CD but it will give you some degree of understanding about what all Keely accomplished which is just now being rediscovered, but of course, without recognizing Keely as the original discoverer. Chapters include; Vibratory Sympathetic and Polar Flows, Vibratory Physics, Latent Force in Interstitial Spaces and much more. To give some idea of how Keely's discoveries are being slowly rediscovered in modern times, check out this Keely History. These two excellent bodies of information will be sent to you on CD. 'The Evolution of Matter' and 'The Evolution of Forces' on CD
KeelyNet Years ago, I had been told by several people, that the US government frequently removes books they deem dangerous or 'sensitive' from libraries. Some are replaced with sections removed or rewritten so as to 'contain' information that should not be available to the public despite the authors intent. A key example was during the Manhattan Project when the US was trying to finalize research into atomic bombs. They removed any books that dealt with the subject and two of them were by Dr. Gustave Le Bon since they dealt with both energy and matter including radioactivity. I had been looking for these two books for many years and fortunately stumbled across two copies for which I paid about $40.00 each. I couldn't put down the books once I started reading them. Such a wealth of original discoveries, many not known or remembered today. / Page 88 - Without the ether there could be neither gravity, nor light, nor electricity, nor heat, nor anything, in a word, of which we have knowledge. The universe would be silent and dead, or would reveal itself in a form which we cannot even foresee. If one could construct a glass chamber from which the ether were to be entirely eliminated, heat and light could not pass through it. It would be absolutely dark, and probably gravitation would no longer act on the bodies within it. They would then have lost their weight. / Page 96-97 - A material vortex may be formed by any fluid, liquid or gaseous, turning round an axis, and by the fact of its rotation it describes spirals. The study of these vortices has been the object of important researches by different scholars, notably by Bjerkness and Weyher. They have shown that by them can be produced all the attractions and repulsions recognized in electricity, the deviations of the magnetic needle by currents, etc. These vortices are produced by the rapid rotation of a central rod furnished with pallets, or, more simply, of a sphere. Round this sphere gaseous currents are established, dissymetrical with regard to its equatorial plane, and the result is the attraction or repulsion of bodies brought near to it, according to the position given to them. It is even possible, as Weyher has proved, to compel these bodies to turn round the sphere as do the satellites of a planet without touching it. / Page 149 - "The problem of sending a pencil of parallel Hertzian waves to a distance possesses more than a theoretical interest. It is allowable to say that its solution would change the course of our civilization by rendering war impossible. The first physicist who realizes this discovery will be able to avail himself of the presence of an enemy's ironclads gathered together in a harbour to blow them up in a few minutes, from a distance of several kilometres, simply by directing on them a sheaf of electric radiations. On reaching the metal wires with which these vessels are nowadays honeycombed, this will excite an atmosphere of sparks which will at once explode the shells and torpedoes stored in their holds. With the same reflector, giving a pencil of parallel radiations, it would not be much more difficult to cause the explosion of the stores of powder and shells contained in a fortress, or in the artillery sparks of an army corps, and finally the metal cartridges of the soldiers. Science, which at first rendered wars so deadly, would then at length have rendered them impossible, and the relations between nations would have to be established on new bases." - More Info

14 Ways to Save Money on Fuel Costs
KeelyNetThis eBook is the result of years of research into various methods to increase mileage, reduce pollution and most importantly, reduce overall fuel costs. It starts out with the simplest methods and offers progressively more detailed technologies that have been shown to reduce fuel costs. As a bonus to readers, I have salted the pages with free interesting BONUS items that correlate to the relevant page. Just filling up with one tank of gas using this or other methods explained here will pay for this eBook. Of course, many more methods are out there but I provided only the ones which I think are practical and can be studied by the average person who is looking for a way to immediately reduce their fuel costs. I am currently using two of the easier methods in my own vehicle which normally gets 18-22 mpg and now gets between 28 and 32 mpg depending on driving conditions.
