Please tell your friends about KeelyNet  ...Thanks! KeelyNet has been online now for 8 years as a BBS, followed by 15 years on the Internet and counting!

Raison d'tre
KeelyNet "This is the true joy in life: To being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. To being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

KeelyNet I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work, the more I live.

I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

04/30/12 - Pigeons May 'Hear' Magnetic Fields
KeelyNet "Individual neurons in birds' brains can relay crucial information about Earth's magnetic field, possibly providing the animals with an 'internal GPS.'

Pigeons' remarkable navigational feats have long been pegged to the birds' ability to sense magnetic fields, but pinning down how they do so has frustrated scientists for years. Work published in Science (abstract) shows that individual cells seem to encode information on a magnetic field's direction, intensity and polarity. The work also suggests that these signals come from a part of the inner ear called the lagena, further complicating matters for researchers in the field.

The Science paper comes just days after a report in Nature (abstract) revealed that cells in pigeons' upper beaks, previously thought to be magnetoreceptors, are actually immune cells called macrophages."

The authors found that vestibular neurons which are linked to balance systems in the inner ear fired differentially in response to alterations in the fields direction, intensity and polarity, and that these cells were especially sensitive to the bandwith that covers Earths geo-magnetic field.

Combining information on direction, intensity and polarity could provide more than just a compass heading; it could be used to produce positional and directional information because of the way Earth's field varies in different locations. It could theoretically be used as a GPS unit, says Dickman. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/30/12 - Graphene Helps a Robot Creep Like an Inchworm

"To develop new materials for robotics, scientists have developed graphene-based actuators that convert electricity into motion. In robots, actuators act like muscles, driving the movement of mechanical arms and fins.

Most actuator materials, such as ceramics and conductive polymers, respond slowly, require a lot of power, or provide very little force. To make speedy, strong actuators, Chinese researchers coated graphene paper with the polymer polydiacetylene.

Graphene provides a highly conductive, flexible backing for the fragile polymer crystals, which deform in response to electrical current.

The actuators can bend 200 times per second and generate more force than most current materials.

Using a sheet of the material, the scientists built a simple inchworm robot that arches and relaxes to crawl forward." - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/30/12 - WW2 Vet Sent 300k Pirated DVDs To Troops In Iraq, Afghanistan
KeelyNet "WW2 veteran 'Big Hy' Strachman, 92, pirated 300,000 DVD movies and sent them to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, where they were widely distributed and deeply appreciated.

Soldiers would gather around personal computers for movie nights, with mortars blasting in the background. 'It's reconnecting to everything you miss,' said one.

Strachman received American flags, appreciative letters, and snapshots of soldiers holding up their DVDs. He spent about $30,000 of his own money. Strachman retired from his family's window and shade business in Manhattan in the 1990s.

After his wife Harriet died in 2003, he spent sleepless nights on the Internet, and saw that soldiers were consistently asking for movie DVDs. He bought bootlegged disks for $5 in Penn Station, and then found a dealer at his local barbershop.

He bought a $400 duplicater that made 7 copies at once, and mailed them 84 at a time, to Army Chaplains. The MPAA said they weren't aware of his operation. The studios send reel-to-reel films to the troops." - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/30/12 - Scientists decode key to spider web strength
KeelyNet Imagine a cloth that gets stronger after it is damaged. That is what scientists recently discovered when probing the strength of garden spider webs.

A research team tested the resistance of a spider web's supporting radial threads and compared that with the thinner spiral threads. They found that placing a certain amount of pressure on just one thread caused it to suddenly stiffen and distribute the stress to the rest of the web.

Of course, too much damage eventually weakened the web, but the initial damage had the opposite effect. After investigators applied even more pressure, the additional stress was not transferred to the whole web, but to tiny protein crystals acting as stress points on the targeted strand. Whether the scientists pushed on a spiral or radial thread, only that strand broke, leaving the whole web intact.

In fact, the whole web strengthened with a few broken strands! The study authors wrote, "The ultimate load capacity increased by 3-10% with the introduction of defects."

If the entire web broke apart because of stress in one area, like when catching an insect, then the spider would have to constantly recycle and recast a new web. Spiders might not survive the energy cost required by all that work.

But because of the superior engineering in both the material and structural layout, spiders can catch multiple meals with the same web, and the web holds its overall strength even in very strong winds. The study authors called this an "optimized" system, meaning that it could not be improved. And if human engineers copy spider web construction tactics, they must conform to "a design stipulation that requires the consideration of both material and structural architecture." - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/26/12 - Market Forces about to produce GREAT NEWS for US Economy
Ten years ago, offshoring manufacturing jobs to China looked like the perfect way to cut costs. But now companies that manufacture everything from computers to car parts are returning to the United States in growing numbers. The country needs to invest in more vocational and technical training programs so millions of jobless factory workers are equipped with the skills to benefit from this trend, say labor economists.

According to a survey by the Boston Consulting Group of executives at 106 manufacturing companies with $1 billion or more in sales, 37 percent said they are planning or actively considering onshoring. Among companies with more than $10 billion in revenue, that percentage shot up to nearly half. Leading the movement were companies that make rubber and plastic products, industrial machinery and electronics and computer equipment.

Manufacturing executives cite several factors driving their decision, said BCG senior partner Harold Sirkin. The first is that the cheap Chinese labor that looked so appealing 10 years ago isnt so cheap anymore.

Chinese labor has been rising at 20 to 50 percent a year since 2001, Sirkin said. Were expecting it to be somewhere around $6 an hour in 2015.

While this is still low compared to the average $26 hourly wage BCG predicts an American manufacturing employee will earn in 2015, Sirkin added that the productivity of American workers is between 3.2 and 3.4 times higher than that of their Chinese counterparts.

Also, American factories tend to be more automated, which means robots rather than paid workers do many tasks.

Now watch government and bama try to take credit when this is clearly market driven as all businesses SHOULD BE..ergo, NO BAILOUTS..LET THEM FAIL. - JWD - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/26/12 - Diet of buckyballs nearly doubles rat lifespan
KeelyNet A recent study French has shown that a diet of buckyballs dissolved in olive extends lifespans in rats.

It now appears that dramatic anti-aging results are associated with dietary ingestion of buckyballs, more properly known as C-60 fullerene.

A recent French study looking for chronic toxicity resulting from ingesting buckyballs dissolved in olive oil found that 10 month old rats who ingested the human equivalent of a tenth of a gram of C-60 buckyballs (which in technical grades cost less than US$10/gram) several times a week showed extended lifespans instead of toxic effects.

All C-60-treated rats survived to at least 59 months, with the oldest surviving to 66 months.

The control group lived for periods ranging from 17 months to 37 months, while an additional group fed only the extra olive oil lived for periods of 36 to 57 months.

For the curious, the olive oil dosage was equivalent to a person adding about eight tablespoons of uncooked olive oil to their daily diet without compensating for the additional calories. Similar results have been reported for mammals held in a state of semi-starvation, but that is obviously not a pleasant lifestyle.

All fullerenes are susceptible to clumping when dissolved in oil, so the preparation of the olive-oil/C-60 solution is rather lengthy. In these tests, 50 mg of C-60 buckyballs were added to 10 ml of virgin olive oil.

These were stirred for two weeks at ambient temperatures with no incident light. Following the stirring, the solutions were centrifuged at 5,000 g for an hour.

The fluid was separated from the precipitate, and was then passed through a 0.25 micron filter. The resulting liquid contained 0.8 mg/ml of C-60 buckyballs. The study was aimed at discovering if a diet of buckyballs has any toxic effects, and the good news is that no toxicity was found. The buckyballs did move throughout the body (including the brain and central nervous system), and even enter individual cells. The ingested C-60 had an elimination half-life from blood of about 10 hours, so was essentially fully eliminated from the body within two days. It is not clear from the report if the C-60 was eliminated from intracellular fluid on that time scale.

Specific studies of the effect of C-60 buckyballs on oxidative stress in the rats were performed by studying the effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) injection. Carbon tetrachloride is well known to be poisonous to rats, being highly hepatotoxic (toxic to the liver). It is also associated with delirium and intoxication such as is experienced in the abuse of solvents.

Rats which had been pretreated by water, by olive oil, and by olive oil containing C-60 buckyballs all showed typical signs of intoxication within a few minutes of CCl4 injection. However, while intoxication persisted in the water and olive oil groups for 24 hours, the olive oil and C-60 group emerged from intoxication after only five hours.

In rats experiencing the pretreatment, but unexposed to carbon tetrachloride, autopsy revealed essentially normal livers. In those given a CCl4 injection, however, the livers from rats pretreated with water or olive oil showed important damage - a great deal of inflammation as well as large necrotic areas (dying or dead tissue). In contrast, the livers from rats pretreated with olive oil and C-60 buckyballs showed little damage or CCl4-induced cell death. Biochemical markers of liver damage showed far less elevation in the rats pretreated with olive oil and C-60.

It does appear there is a real physiological effect on metabolic processes, and that oxidative stress in particular is significantly reduced in rats by chronic oral ingestion of an olive oil/C-60 solution.

As oxidative stress is one of the factors usually associated with aging, there may well be a reasonable mechanism for the lifespan extension, especially if excess oxidation within individual cells is prevented by intracellular buckyballs. Will people react to a treatment of this sort with lifespans of 180-200 years? Only time will tell. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/26/12 - Glitch in the Matrix
This is really simple but has such an awesome effect. Fill a bucket full of water and place it about 5 feet off the ground.

Place a subwoofer about 1 foot lower than the bucket. Run a plastic tube from the top bucket down in front of the subwoofer. Tape the tube to the front of the speaker.

Then aim the end of the tube to an empty bucket on the floor. Get the water flowing from the top bucket. Now just generate a 24 hz sine wave and set your camera to 24 fps and watch the magic happen.

Basically your cameras frame rate is synced up with the rate of the vibrations of the water so it appears to be frozen or still.

Now if you play a 23 hz sine wave your frame rate will be off just a little compared to the sine wave causing the water to "move backward" or so as it appears. You can play a 25 hz sine wave and cause the water to move slowly foward. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/26/12 - Snakes and Islands possible solution to Fusion Barrier
An in-depth analysis by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energys Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) zeroed in on tiny, bubble-like islands that appear in the hot, charged gases or plasmas during experiments. These minute islands collect impurities that cool the plasma. And it is these islands, the scientists report in the April 20 issue of Physical Review Letters, that are at the root of a long-standing problem known as the density limit that can prevent fusion reactors from operating at maximum efficiency.

Fusion occurs when plasmas become hot and dense enough for the atomic nuclei contained within the hot gas to combine and release energy. But when the plasmas in experimental reactors called tokamaks reach the mysterious density limit, they can spiral apart into a flash of light.

The big mystery is why adding more heating power to the plasma doesnt get you to higher density, said David A. Gates, a principal research physicist at PPPL and co-author of the proposed solution with Luis Delgado-Aparicio, a post-doctoral fellow at PPPL and a visiting scientist at MITs Plasma Science Fusion Center.

These islands actually inflict double damage, the scientists said. Besides cooling the plasma, the islands act as shields that block out added power. The balance tips when more power escapes from the islands than researchers can pump into the plasma through a process called ohmic heating the same process that heats a toaster when electricity passes through it. When the islands grow large enough, the electric current that helps to heat and confine the plasma collapses, allowing the plasma to fly apart.

The scientists theory represents a fresh approach to the density limit, which also is known as the Greenwald limit after MIT physicist Martin Greenwald, who has derived an equation that describes it. Greenwald has another potential explanation of the source of the limit. He thinks it may occur when turbulence creates fluctuations that cool the edge of the plasma and squeeze too much current into too little space in the core of the plasma, causing the current to become unstable and crash.

In early 2011, the topic of plasma islands had mostly receded from Gates mind. But a talk by Delgado-Aparicio about the possibility of such islands erupting in the plasmas contained within the Alcator C-Mod tokamak reignited his interest. Delgado-Aparicio spoke of corkscrew-shaped phenomena called snakes that had first been been observed by PPPL scientists in the 1980s and initially reported by German physicist Arthur Weller.

Intrigued by the talk, Gates urged Delgado-Aparicio to read the papers on islands by Rebut and Suttrop. An email from Delgado-Aparicio landed in Gates in-box some eight months later. In it was a paper that described the behavior of snakes in a way that fit nicely with the C-Mod data. I said, Wow! Hes made a lot of progress, Gates remembers. I said, You should come down and talk about this.

What most excited Gates was an equation for the growth of islands that hinted at the density limit by modifying a formula that British physicist Paul Harding Rutherford had derived back in the 1980s. I thought, If Wolfgang (Suttrop) was right about the islands, this equation should be telling us the Greenwald limit, Gates said. So when Luis arrived I pulled him into my office. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/26/12 - Aftermath of BP oil spill: mutant seafood
KeelyNet Signs of the impact on the regional ecosystem are ominous: mutated shrimp, fish with oozing sores, underdeveloped blue crabs lacking claws, eyeless crabs and shrimp and scientists and fishermen point fingers towards BPs oil as being the cause.

Tracy Kuhns and her husband Mike Roberts, commercial fishers from Barataria, Louisiana, are finding eyeless shrimp.

At the height of the last white shrimp season, in September, one of our friends caught 400 pounds of these, Kuhns told Al Jazeera while showing a sample of the eyeless shrimp.

According to Kuhns, at least 50 per cent of the shrimp caught in that period in Barataria Bay, a popular shrimping area that was heavily impacted by BPs oil and dispersants, were eyeless. Kuhns added: Disturbingly, not only do the shrimp lack eyes, they even lack eye sockets. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/22/12 - Print-Out Your Own Drugs at Home?
magine a future where you can just download a drug off the internet and print it out when you need a quick pick-me-up its just become a reality thanks to the marvels of 3D printers. Researchers from Scotland have made their own DIY 3D-printing drugstore and they reckon youll be able to use them to print your own drugs right from the comfort of your own home.

From cases for your Raspberry Pi to printing up mini-F1 cars, the possibilities are endless for 3D printers, and theyre not even that expensive any more either. Boffins from the University of Glasgow used a system that cost just 1,250 range to create both organic and inorganic chemicals, which can be combined to form things like cancer drugs.

The researchers are calling the concept reactionware, where the compounds are layered one on top of the other like a cake. Its not until a liquid is applied to the top layer that the reaction takes place forming your drug of choice.

Its almost like a layer cake you print the last reactionary agent first and then build other chemical layers above, finally adding a liquid at the top. The liquid goes to layer one making a new molecule, which goes to the next layer creating another and so on until at the bottom you get your prescription drug out. - Full Article Source - Permalink

"Getting access to enough water to drink in a desert environment is a pretty tough proposition, but Eole Water may have solved the problem. It has created a wind turbine that can extract up to 1,000 liters of water per day from the air. All it requires is a 15mph wind to generate the 30kW's of power required for the process to happen. The end result is a tank full of purified water ready to drink at the base of each turbine." - Full Article Source - Permalink

    04/22/12 - Peppers' Ghost Hologram
John Pepper, a British chemist, adapted a technique conceived by fellow Briton Henry Dircks, for use in the theater by the middle of the 19th century. As a result, the technique was named after him.

So heres how it works: the audience needs to be able to see into the main room, but not into an adjacent hidden room. In the case of the Tupac "hologram," thats the main stage where a real-life Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre were sharing the limelight.

However, hidden on stage is a piece of glass, where the images can be reflected from and pushed into a target area that makes it seem like a single room. But off to the side, behind the glass, theres a hidden room that has the original object being projected.

These days, AV Concepts, the San Diego-based company behind the Tupac performance, uses a proprietary Mylar foil, known as Musion Eyeliner, rather than glass. The company said in a press release on Monday that its on-site server "delivered uncompressed media for 3 stacked 1920 x 1080 images, delivering 54,000 lumens of incredibly clear projected imagery."

"For a large piece of glass to support its own weight on the 45-degree angle, it has to be very thick," explained James Rock, a creative director at Musion, a British company that has pioneered this technique, in a 2010 interview with the UK newspaper The Independent. "And that means you get a double image. It was called a Pepper's 'ghost' as the image wasn't very bright when using pre-electric light sources." - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/22/12 - Increasing Energy with the Mexistim
KeelyNetIs it possible to pump up the body energy level and help the body remove toxins with a machine that uses batteries to 'charge' a wirescreen that you place on or under your body? Many report this is what the Mexistim does for them, especially when they sleep on top of a pad or blanket placed over a large wirescreen. Just 10 D cell batteries wired to provide 3vdc. Then change polarity approximately every 15 minutes. That's all there is to it, yet something happens with many who try it, most notably reports of increased energy and more restful sleep. Two versions available for regular users or for experimentalists or even doctors who have bought the Universal model.

    Based on Lee Crocks 2nd version of the 'Energy Cleaner'. The 2nd version was used with good results on over 10,000 people according to the inventor. Lee claimed his 'energy cleaner' assists the body to purge toxins from the cells. Each person's body is different with a constantly changing acid and alkali balance, varying daily stresses and other factors which affect healing. We are basically living filters which trap all kinds of toxins and noxious materials from the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe and which settle in our tissues to bring about a variety of illnesses, cancer and even organ failure. In my case, it has been quite beneficial for;

    KeelyNet 1) Restful, sound sleep
    2) Increased red cell count
    3) Elimination of seasonal allergies
    4) Increased overall energy
    5) No headaches
    6) No stomach pains or aches
    7) No muscle pains
    8) Weight loss

    KeelyNet Patent number: 8093869 - Filing date: Dec 3, 2008 - Issue date: Jan 10, 2012 - Inventor: Graham A Gunderson

A ferromagnetic material having non-zero magnetoelasticity, and/or nonzero magnetostriction is driven with vibratory mechanical energy at a frequency producing at least one resonant vibratory mode, by coupling a source of vibratory energy to the ferromagnetic structure.

The ferromagnetic material threads at least one conductive wire or wire coil, and couples to at least one source of magnetic induction, and provides an electrical power output driven by the magnetic induction.

The origin of vibratory energy and the site or sites of magnetic induction are situated at distinct locations, separated by a specific distance not less than ? the fundamental acoustic wavelength.

Various combinations of acoustic wavelength, ferromagnetic material type, and source of vibration produce independent transfer coefficients between acoustic and electromagnetic energy which are either positive, zero, or negative. 04/18/12 - Effect of light on gravitational attraction

You can email Louis Rancourt if you have comments, questions, etc.. - It is shown in the first part that when a 30 laminar beam of 1.5 W red laser light passes between a freely moving mass on a torsion pendulum and a fixed mass, there is an increase of the attraction between the two masses.

In the second part, when a laminar light beam passes close to a freely moving single mass on a torsion pendulum, the mass will move toward the light beam.

This appears to show gravity is a emails courtesy of Professor Rancourt he provided additional information.

    1st email

I am a physics professor at collge Boral, Sudbury, Ontario. With the help of the college laser, I was able to control gravitational attraction between two 200 g mass (7 ounce) using a laminar laser beam from a 1.5 watt laser.

The results were published in December 2011 in Physics Essays. It takes time for the public to realize it is now possible to block gravity using light. Many applications will come from this method. Any lab with a powerful laser can experiment in blocking gravity.

    2nd email

Literature often says we cannot yet block gravity. Now we can do it and it was done many times.

Yes, many experiments with a laminar light beam from a 1.5 watt red laser is able to block part of horizontal push (that we call gravity) and a 200 g mass on a torsion pendulum moves towards the light beam. It was repeated almost 100 times...

And yes, all precautions were taken to rule out any air movement or electric field. At one point, the laser ligth was sent in a close box near the 200 g mass and it still moves toward the 'hiden' ligth because the light ray had block the horizontal push on one side.

    3rd email

Yes it is possible to increase weight by sending a laminar light beam under an object. The effect is very small, unless the laser is powerful.

If light is placed above, the pushing gravity from above is reduced and the object will loses weight.

Since gravity push is so small compare to electric field, it is important to shield the system form any static electric field and any alternate current that would cause induce current in the object.

When the light ray was placed in a rectangular mirror box, so that the mobile mass could not 'see' the light, the effect was instantaneous.

The mobile mass was pushed to the mirrors where the light was.

We should verify results published and ignore when electric field is present because it is almost impossible to prove that the results are not from a disturbance from static electricity.

    Other separate interesting comments

Instead of blocking gravity, the moving mass was attracted more to the fixed mass.

I realized that what light was blocking did not come from the fixed mass but from space around the masses.

Looking on Internet, I realized that Lesage had proposed to Newton that gravity might be a pushing force instead of an attractive force. This is not taught in physics courses anymore and I was not aware of his theories.

Many more results were consistent with this discovery. That confirms the theory that the cause of gravitation is not an attractive force from matter but a pushing force coming from every directions of space. For an apple falling to the ground, an object like Earth can block some of that pushing force coming from below an apple; the force above the apple is stronger and the apple is pushed toward the ground as if it was attracted by the planet Earth.

Conclusion: The fact that light can block gravitational forces can explain also why the shape of galaxies is like a donut instead of a sphere. Many other physics discrepancies will be explained in the future.

These facts also give us a better understanding of what is gravity; it is the net results of opposing forces. These forces are coming from space in all directions and act on every atom in the universe.

Gravitational force is a fictitious force and this is why we could not unite it with real physical forces like electric force or nuclear force.

Many applications of this discovery will help people. For example, if strong laser beam in a mirror box is placed over a bed ridden patient, the pushing force from above is lesser and the weight of the patient is less; he could cure faster with less bed sores.

The paper giving all the details of these results was published in Physics Essay, December 2011.

Clearly this discovery needs verification and scaling up with more powerful lasers to see if the effect can be increased for tractor type beams. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/14/12 - Creating a Ripple in the Force of the Power Industry
KeelyNet Working with many early stage inventors, I often have the privilege of seeing some truly remarkable inventions and innovations. A few days ago I was shown a technology that snugly fits into that remarkable category, one that has the potential to radically transform the way cars and other vehicles are powered. In fact, vehicles using this power source will never need to stop and refuel.

Im not at liberty to explain this technology in detail, but bu using this power source to fuel what is otherwise an electric vehicle, these cars will have 70% fewer moving parts no ignition, gas tank, oil filter, catalytic converter, or muffler and in this case, a highly efficient, non-traditional battery that will outlive the life of the rest of the car.

The best part is that it emits as close to zero pollution as we may ever hope to get.

After seeing this stunning new technology I had to take a step back and assess its true potential. It provides tremendous advantages on every front. Easy to manufacture, simple to understand, while being less expensive to build and operate, it has the potential to operate virtually maintenance free for decades.

On the surface it sounds too good to be true, but rest assured, it does exist. It offers a breakthrough tantamount to nuclear fusion.

Existing industries have an employee base, investors, vendors, customers, and users that may consist of millions of people. These are people who are comfortable with where they are today and have formed a natural resistance to change.

This change-resistant population creates a formidable inertia to maintain the status quo. For this reason, even holy-grail technologies like superconductors, cures for cancer, anti-gravity, or human teleportation will go through a somewhat lengthy adoption curve.

In addition to natural resistance, we also see aggressive tactics used to bolster a companys current position. Welcome to the world of so called free enterprise.

Much like a messy political campaign, well-established companies resort to a number of dark side business practices to keep an upstart at bay:

    * Discredit the technology

    * Discredit the company

    * Pose counter-claims

    * Use credible people to say it aint so

    * Distract people from the truth

    * Discredit the founders

    * Use legal maneuvers to keep it tied up in court for decades

The startup power company I referred to above is currently looking for a CEO to help guide their efforts and steer clear of these dark side pitfalls. They are looking for someone who has guided a rapid, high-growth company from zero to a billion dollar industry. Only a handful of these wunderkind currently exist.

If an added criteria is that this person has to have done this in the power industry, the number of viable candidates drops to zero.

Up till now, no one has been able to dislodge the existing power structure of the power industry. It is entrenched, ingrained and the infrastructure is in place. But how long will can they hang on to this dominance in the future when companies start thinking outside of the (power) lines?

When will some new technology become the silver bullet that causes the industry giants to collapse? - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/14/12 - Using Non-Newtonian Fluids To Fill Potholes
"Non-Newtonian fluids are the stars of high school science demonstrations. In one example, an ooey-gooey batter made from corn starch and water oozes like a liquid when moved slowly. But punch it, or run across a giant puddle of it, and it becomes stiff like a solid. Now, a group of college students has figured out a new use for the strange stuff: filler for potholes."

"So we were putzing around with different ideas and things we wanted to work withand we were like, what's a common, everyday problem all around the world that everybody hates?" explains 21-year-old team member Curtis Obert. "And we landed on potholes." He and four other students decided on a non-Newtonian fluid as a solution because of its unusual physical properties. "When there's no force being applied to it, it flows like a liquid does and fills in the holes," says Obert, "but when it gets run over, it acts like a solid."

Scientists call liquids that behave like this non-Newtonian because the viscosity, or resistance, of the fluid changes in response to the forces that are applied to it. This is in contrast to Newtonian fluids, which maintain their fluid state regardless of disturbances.

There are plenty of familiar non-Newtonian fluids, says Michael Graham, a chemical engineer not involved in the project who studies non-Newtonian fluid behavior at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Mayonnaise, ketchup, silly putty, and even blood are examples. Although these substances seem very different, Graham points out that they all contain some sort of particleand the interaction of those particles explains their behavior.

Ketchup and mayonnaise are shear-thinning fluids. When sitting on your counter, they are thick and clumpy and don't flow because the particles have a tendency to stick together at rest, explains Graham. "Ketchup is actually mashed up tomatoes, and it's the little particles of tomato that are interacting with one another and keeping the fluid from moving," he says. "Mayonnaise is droplets of fat that stick together." But pressing on a glob of mayonnaise with a knife or shaking a bottle of ketchup creates shear stresses that disrupt the particles, so the fluids become runnier and more spreadable.

The type of material the students chose is the opposite of ketchup and mayonnaise. It's shear-thickening, meaning that when a shear stress is appliedsay by the force of a car tireit becomes stiffer and resists flowing. That's because the particles slip and slide past each other easily when moved gently, but they get stuck when strong forces are applied. "The harder you push on it, the higher the viscosity gets. If you push it really rapidly, the particles in the corn starch don't have time to rearrange and get around one another and they jam up," says Graham.

When fluid is moving quickly it is said to have a high "shear rate." At relatively low shear rates (i.e. when the fluid is disturbed gently), repulsive forces between the particles prevent them from clumping together and keep them evenly distributed throughout the fluid. However, when the shear forces that push the particles together become larger than the repulsive forces keeping them apart, the particles temporarily cluster together and form small chains called hydroclusters. Unlike individual particles, which can easily move around each other, the hydroclusters get locked in place and can't move, making the fluid temporarily behave like a solid.

The students say a little experimentation was required to get just the right formulation. "By working with different size particles, you can get different viscosities from it," says Obert. What they came up with is a powdered mixture that is stored in specially designed waterproof bags, which are made of a strong fiber like Kevlar lined with silicone. To produce a ready-made pothole patch, city workers would simply add water and seal the bag.

Currently, potholes are repaired by packing them with asphalt, which is messy, smelly, time-consuming, and requires specialized personnel and equipment, says Obert. By contrast, the fluid filled bags can be carried around in the trunks of police cruisers or vans and dropped into potholes on the spot by employees with little training or experience. They would then be covered with black adhesive fabric so that drivers don't perceive them as a hazard. "We definitely don't want people avoiding them," says team member Mayank Saksena.

The students have road-tested their designs on a number of Cleveland's potholes and found that the bags continue to perform well after more than a week of continuous use in high-traffic areas. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/14/12 - Expect a Flood of Competitions As US Tries To Spur Public Inventions
"When it comes to stirring the brains of genius, a good competition can bring forward some really great ideas. That's the driving notion behind myriad public competitions, or challenges, as they are often labeled, that will take place in the near future sponsored by the U.S. government.

The competitions are increasing by design as part of the $45 billion America Competes Act renewed by Congress last year that gave every federal department and agency the authority to conduct prize competitions, according to the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy."

The Competes act took its impetus from some pretty successful competitive programs already in place from government entities such as NASA, DARPA and the Department of Energy as well as private competition experts at the X Prize Foundation.

The X Prize Foundation last year detailed a top eight list of key challenges that could end up being public competitions in the coming months or years. The eight X Prize concepts or challenges included:

    1. Water ("Super 'Brita' Water Prize") - Develop a technology to solve the world's number one cause of death: Lack of safe drinking water.

    2. Personal Health Monitoring System ("OnStar for the Body Prize") - Develop and demonstrate a system which continuously monitors an individual's personal health-related data leading to early detection of disease or illness.

    3. Energy & Water from Waste - Create and demonstrate a technology that generates off-grid water and energy for a small village derived from human and organic waste.

    4. Around The World Ocean Survey - Create an autonomous underwater vehicle that can circumnavigate the world's oceans, gathering data each step of the way.

    5. Transforming Parentless Youth - Dramatically and positively change the outcome for significantly at risk foster children, reducing the number of incarcerations and unemployment rate by fifty-percent or more.

    6. Brain-Computer Interface ("Mind over Matter") - Enable high function, minimally invasive brain to computer interfaces that can turn thought into action.

    7. Wireless Power Transmission - Wireless transmission of electricity over distances greater than 200 miles while losing less than two percent of the electricity during the transmission.

    8. Ultra Fast Point-To-Point Travel - Design and fly the world's fastest point-to-point passenger travel system.

One of the driving principles behind the X Prize as well as the Competes challenges not only to win the competition but to be able to take those winning designs and turn them into real products. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/14/12 - Nasa plan to 'knock' space junk out of orbit using puffs of gas

A team from the University of Michigan is investigating a new technology where 'pulses' of gas will be fired into the path of debris.

The technology would increase 'drag' on orbiting space junk, leaving it to plunge downwards into Earth's atmosphere.

The pulses themselves would leave no trace - and the new method also leaves no solid material in orbit.

The proposed new system would be known as the Space Debris Elimination (SpaDE) system - and would aim to remove debris from orbit by firing focused pulses of atmospheric gases into the path of targeted debris.

The research will produce an academic paper and presentation describing the technical results and providing the foundation for future work, to include prototyping, field experiments and ultimately deployment of a SpaDE system. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/14/12 - Legal Loophole May Pave Way For Private Ownership Of Outer Space
KeelyNet Rand Simberg, a space policy consultant, laid out his proposal, called the Space Settlement Prize Act in a paper published April 2 by the libertarian think tank The Competitive Enterprise Institute, according to a report by Wired.

In order for the large-scale colonization of space to move forward, governments such as the U.S. would provide "property rights for those who seek to develop space resources and infrastructure," the draft act states. The proposal places the onus of space exploration on private enterprise rather than taxpayer contributions and, if passed, would signal a radical change in the way we think about outer space.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits sovereign nations from owning a celestial body -- such as a planet or asteroid -- and has been ratified by 100 countries, including the United States. But the treaty does not explicitly prohibit ownership of space resources by private enterprises. This is the loophole that Simberg's plan would seek to use, and he plans to shop it around on Capitol Hill, according to Popular Science.

In the spirit of American expansion into the old west, Simberg's proposal banks on the assumption that issuing property rights to space resources will create a kind of gold rush that would bring the national economy along for the ride. But with no one to build the wagons -- let alone drive them -- the trail ends where it starts. As yet, there's no destiny to manifest on the final frontier. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/11/12 - Elon Musk on making life multi-planetary
KeelyNet Do you see a space-faring civilization as a way of defending humanity against a catastrophe on Earth?

Absolutely. We would be backing up the biosphere.

We wouldn't just be preserving humanity, we would be preserving much of life.

It is certainly possible for some calamity to come along as we see in the several major extinction events in the fossil record.

Humanity has obviously developed the means of destroying itself, so I think we need planetary redundancy to protect against the unlikely possibility of natural or man-made Armageddon.

It is important that we take action now to make life multi-planetary, because this is really the first point in the 4-billion-year history of Earth that it has been possible.

That window of possibility will hopefully be open for a long time, but it may only be open for a short time. That's why I think urgent action is required on making life multi-planetary.

Rockets will work but be dangerous, costly and slow. He needs to fund alt science for true gravity control projects. - JWD - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/11/12 - Photoacoustic Imaging Uses Sight, Sound For Cancer Detection
"A new imaging technique combines light and sound to create detailed, color pictures of tumors deep inside the body.

It's hoped the technology, called photoacoustic tomography, will help doctors diagnose cancer earlier than is now possible and to more precisely monitor the effects of cancer treatment all without the radiation involved in X-rays and CT scans or the expense of MRIs.

By combining sounds and light, the technology can penetrate the body's tissues to visualize tumors at depths never before possible."

Photoacoustic imagery brings together the best of both worlds light and sound. It converts light absorbed by soft tissues in the body into sound waves, which easily penetrate tissues. The tissue to be imaged is then irradiated by a nanosecond-pulsed laser at an optical wavelength.

Absorption of light by molecules beneath the surface creates a thermally induced pressure jump that launches sound waves, which are measured by ultrasound receivers at the bodys surface and reassembled to create what is, in effect, a photograph.

Photoacoustic images have a much higher contrast than X-ray images because there are many highly colored molecules in the body that naturally serve as contrast agents. These include hemoglobin, which changes color as it gains or loses oxygen, but also melanin, the pigment that makes moles dark, and DNA, which in its condensed form in the cell nucleus is darker than the cell cytoplasm.

With a little help from organic dyes or genes engineered to express colorful products, photoacoustic tomography can also image tissues, such as lymph nodes, that would otherwise blend in with their surroundings.

Every issue of every top journal publishes exciting lab discoveries, but only a tiny fraction of them are ever translated into clinical practice, he says. My hope is that photoacoustic tomography can help translate microscopic lab discoveries into macroscopic clinical practice. - Full Article Source - Permalink

The study also found Florida drivers to be a bit more loyal to the hybrid segment than elsewhere in the country. 'It's hard to know what's causing the low repurchase rate.

One reason is that about 17,000 people purchased electric cars last year, and other data shows that many of those were trading in a hybrid vehicle.

Honda has been hounded by high-profile class-action and small claims court lawsuits over fuel economy issues with older models of its Civic hybrid. ... Hybrid vehicles represent just 2.4% of the overall new vehicle market in the U.S., according to Polk, down from a high of 2.9% in 2008.'" - Full Article Source - Permalink

Electric vehicle gearheads grouse about proprietary code that keeps current, torque and speed within very conservative limits.

'In racing, you need the system to push all those parameters to the limits.

You only need the system to survive until just past the finish line,' says Bill Dube, the owner of the record-setting KillaCycle.

    04/11/12 - Mind, Matter, Flight
    I've been pondering about biolevitation and how it might relate to this idea of superconducting diamagnetic water as posted at;

This leads me to believe the mind could possibly focus thought with such intensity that it could intensify the field strength of the diamagnetic properties of its 98% water constitution for temporary flight.

As opposed to ingestion of a powder or drink which would suffuse throughout the body liquids to provide diamagnetic lift.

That too means you could basically set the LEVEL at which you wished to 'float' in the air based on your body weight, the earths magnetic field intensity in that area and the amount of the diamagnetic superconducting material you ingest.

So perhaps a glass of the fluid would effectively reduce the 'weight' of your body down to 15-30 pounds or so....letting you bound along like a tethered balloon as in the negative gravity story.

    While a gallon would be enough to fully offset your 'weight' and cause you to find a level above the surface of the earth which your body would always seek because the magnetic forces are LaGrange points in space, where gravity fields cancel;

The Lagrange points mark positions where the combined gravitational pull of the two large masses provides precisely the centripetal force required to rotate with them.

And of course by taking more, it could throw you off the planet into space...

Since everything seeks equilibrium, the diamagnetic repulsion of the water in the body from both north and south fields, would cause the entire body to be repelled from the earths magnetic field lines to a height where the fields balance out.

KeelyNet One final thought...Keely discovered what he called the 'sympathetic attendant' is an extension of the nerve force of the body into surrounding a ghostly thread that lets you extend your senses, meaning bidirectionality of the signals so that you could actually feel heat or sensation, like some kind of natural bio tactile scanner...

    Much like with electronics...if you can detect a signal, you can project a the hysterical state oscillators amplify and amplifiers oscillate so there must be a balance of sensibility (reaction to sensation) for accurate feedback and control;

Unthinking people scoff and laugh at the idea of mind over matter...and yet, the body disproves this with every breath. The mind sends out controlling signals and energy to the body, telling all the organs to work, what they should do, when they should do it, when we should breathe, run, move or rest.

All done by these SYMPATHATIC ATTENDANTS of extended nerve forces which course through our bodies....and yet...according to Keely this force can be sent outside the body to communicate and even control other bodies...

that the planets and basically anything that exists has a consciousness which carries with it the ability to scan and change its environment by virtue of projecting this sympathetic attendant so that it allows the mind to express (project) its WILL into nascent matter.

The mind naturally extrudes these multiplexed sympathetic attendants like tentacles and by concentrated will force causes the accumulation of the building blocks of life into all that we are and then allows us to control matter with our mind force.

My point here is by the WILL of the mind, we can cause the sympathetic attendants to concentrate energy to change the properties of matter....meaning, it might be possible to greatly INTENSIFY and use the natural diamagnetic effect of water to produce levitation at will.

No one since Keely has researched such things because so few understand his self-made terminology trying to describe what he was seeing and experiencing in his experiments.

Today, we have only got to the level of a possible 'Ghost in the Machine'...when that ghost could well be us.

    Look at the experiments of John Hutchison with his Poltergeist like phenomena;

Where seemingly random discharges of AC and DC produce bizarre physical effects (levitation, throwing things, changing mass properties, etc.) an electrical creature being born and sending out 'sympathetic attendants' of energy to scan and learn from its environment.

What if we could learn to focus our minds into some kind of altered consciousness state (ideally running in the background so we could be doing other things)...that would allow us to concentrate our will and direct it to massively increase the diamagnetic characteristic of the water within our the floating Dutch frogs.

We should be able to set it to any level of intensity we you wish to just bound along the ground by simple weight loss (negative gravity) or do you jump many feet at a time (lung gom pa) or do you wish to be thrown up into the clouds to fly (the floating wonder)?

People will tell you the magnetic field strength of the earth is not sufficient to provide lift of use.

KeelyNet Well that depends on what you are throwing at it. Years ago, I received a paranoid call from a guy in Atlanta wanting to know if I knew of any small power seems this fellow had built a 3 foot sphere which he powered from the wall created a magnetic field so focused and so strong that he could fly the sphere around in his backyard...

The problem was heating...the power cable would become almost red hot so he'd have to shut'r'down and let it cool off if he made it before it burned up.

I had nothing for him at the power levels he needed...a few months later he called me back and said now he wanted to build a 6 foot UNTETHERED sphere in which he could fly around but again could not find a power supply that he could take with him...that was the last I heard from him.

There is another fellow who has a similar design....years ago he was using superconducting wire for the coils in his magnetic sphere device.

When supercooled, the sphere would shoot off into space and thats that.

This inventor was approached by many tirekicker troll types wanting to see PROOF of his the inventor would scrounge up the money to build another sphere (roughly $5,000) and they'd meet on a deserted beach....the inventor would saturate the sphere in liquid nitrogen and whoosh...the sphere would shoot off into space.

Solar, wind and orthodox approaches won't cut it. - JWD Google once brashly believed that its engineers could invent a solution to the world's energy problems. These days, the company has a new strategy: finance less risky clean-energy projects where it can actually make an impact.

Last year, Google invested more than ever in renewable power, spending $880 million to underwrite conventional clean-energy projects such as solar panels on California rooftops. But that isn't the role the company envisioned for itself in 2007, when cofounder and current CEO Larry Page declared that it would get into energy research directly, intending to "rapidly" invent cheap ways to generate "renewable electricity at globally significant scale."

Google believed its creativity and innovation would make the difference. It created an in-house plan to wean the United States off fossil fuel in 22 years. It posted jobs for engineers who could speed up design of renewable-energy projects and put a team to work improving the heliostat, a mirrored device that focuses the sun's rays to make thermal energy. Its philanthropy arm,, began investing in startups with far-out ideas.

Last November, however, Google killed the program, known as RE cheaper than C (for renewable energy cheaper than coal), along with several other endeavors that hadn't had the desired results. Other companies, Google said, were in a better position to advance specific energy technologies.

The truth was Google's eclectic bets on potentially disruptive energy innovations never got very far. Take PowerMeter, another canceled project. The software was meant to help homeowners monitor their energy use. Energy entrepreneur Kurt Brown says it had a major flaw: "Their interface was for nerds. It was something mostly a smart Googler would be intrigued by."

The cancelled plans show the hazards of believing that success in computingwhere products can take days to prototypecan carry over to energy. "The IT attitude is great when combined with humility with what is possible," says Jonathan Koomey, an expert on the environmental effects of computing at Stanford University. "But if you think you are going to overhaul the whole energy industry overnight, just because you did it in softwarethat is false, that is hubris."

They made a basic mistake, they CANNOT THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. All that money and effort thrown away...imagine what I and my associates could DO with just a portion of that much money, directed to hundreds of alt science projects? It only takes one of them to pan out and everyone would be all over this kind of research. - JWD - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/08/12 - Battery-Powered Plasma Flashlight Makes Short Work of Bacteria
KeelyNet "An international team of scientists has created a handheld, battery powered device that has been shown to effectively rid skin of bacteria in an instant by blasting it with plasma.

The plasma flashlight, which shouldn't be confused with a plasma torch that will damage much more than bacteria if used on the skin, could provide a convenient way for paramedics and military personnel to deal with harmful bacteria in the field.

The self-contained device is powered by a 12 V battery and doesn't require any external gas feed or handling system.

The plume of plasma it generates is between 20-23C (68-73.4F), so it won't damage the skin.

It is also fitted with resistors to stop it heating up and becoming too hot to touch.

Its creators say it can also be easily manufactured at a cost of less than US$100 per unit."

In an experiment carried out by the scientists, the plasma flashlight effectively inactivated thick biofilms of Enterococcus faecalis, a bacterium that often infects the root canals in dental treatments and is highly antibiotic- and heat-resistant.

Created by incubating the bacteria for seven days, the biofilms consisted of 17 different layers of bacteria. After treating each biofilm with the plasma flashlight for five minutes, the plasma was found to penetrate deep into the very bottom layer and inactivate the bacteria.

While plasma has previously been shown to effectively kill bacteria and viruses on the surface of the skin and water, the exact mechanism behind this is still not understood.

Ultraviolet radiation has been theorized as a reason, but the jet created by the plasma flashlight is low in UV radiation, which adds to the safety of using the device on a persons skin. The reactions between the plasma and the surrounding air has also been suggested as another possibility. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/08/12 - MIT's Gloomy Prediction: 'Global Economic Collapse' By 2030

"A new study from researchers at Jay W. Forrester's institute at MIT says that the world could suffer from 'global economic collapse' and 'precipitous population decline' if people continue to consume the world's resources at the current pace.

The study's researchers created a computing model to forecast different scenarios based on the current models of population growth and global resource consumption, different levels of agricultural productivity, birth control and environmental protection efforts.

Most of the computer scenarios found population and economic growth continuing at a steady rate until about 2030. But without 'drastic measures for environmental protection,' the scenarios predict the likelihood of a population and economic crash."

What will save us? New alt science technology that includes new energy generators/converters that do not require combustion but convert energy or thrust directly from gravity, magnetism, cosmic/earth energy, gravity control to allow an increase or decrease in 'weight and inertia' of local mass and ways to heal and rejuvenate the body for those who can see.

We need a new way forward, one that doesn't depend upon now defunct ideas like progress or growth or advancement or other similar ideas. Instead, as Bill McKibben put it in his excellent book Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, we need a new vocabulary, one with words like durable that convey what we really need: to weather the storm of the reversal of growth as our bills from our overshoot come due.

This is a conversation that we need to start having. The growth & durability of our nation depends upon it. - Full Article Source - Permalink

Begley sought to double-check the findings before trying to build on them for drug development.

Result: 47 of the 53 could not be replicated.

04/08/12 - Onions and Precious Metals

The theory he (David Hudson) postulates is that in precious metals, they coexist like skins of an onion and that by successive heating, it will vaporize away the lower heat elements.

That these can be successively recovered so that from a sample of silver you could product tens of thousands of dollars in value by collecting all the elements 'embedded' within the silver.

KeelyNet The key was this Russian mass spectrometry method which is supposed to prove this claim by using extended burns of up to 300 seconds, where roughly every 15 seconds a different element would appear.

When I asked David about it, he compared it to the cooling system in a car engine...that water flows through the radiator and cooling coils to keep the engine from burning long as you keep it within a working temperature range (or lower), the engine is not damaged...but exceed that temperature range and the water boils off and the engine burns up.

Now the Russians use these temperature ranges to reveal the varous elements as the prior ones boil off, just like peeling an onion.

Alchemist Hans Nintzel said he had been contacted by an old man who lived in El Paso who claimed he had discovered a mix of off the shelf household chemicals you could buy at any grocery store and which could be used to extract gold from literally anything...from the dust in your house, to wallpaper, to soil in your yard, anywhere because he said the earth was saturated with very fine gold powder. When treasure hunting around gold mines, this 'powder' gold is called 'flour gold' and is very confusing for the machine.

This old man made his living extracting gold but wanted to sell the process. He got lots of people expressing interest, even the mafia approached him with an offer of I believe it was 20 million. The man was in his mid 70s, no family, in ill health and wanted to enjoy life in comfort which is why he was willing to just sell it out. This was back in the late 1960s.

But he became worried when the mafia found out and tried to buy it...they pushed and threatened him, he balked and as I understood it, the old man was found dead, his rooms stripped looking for the secret. But he told Hans the secret was in his head and never written down. Unfortunately he didn't trust Hans with it, but he did show Hans how it was done by taking a pile of newspapers and extracting a tiny amount of gold using his process.

The thing that fascinated Hans was this recovery process was carried out using off-the-shelf chemicals you could buy at any grocery Drano, bleach, salt, etc...

You read about alchemists and 'magicians' in the past who claimed to be able to make silver, gold and jewels at will.

It makes me wonder if rather than TRANSMUTING lead or silver into gold, if instead they used this onion technique to peel away the less valuable silver to get to the gold.

Maybe there is some chemical combination which also could use heat and pressure that would produce the peeling effect.

Seems like it would be a simpler matter to buy bulk silver and transmute it to gold...but the stories and legends usually refer to lead converted into gold, not silver into gold. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    04/05/12 - Propeller Ring raises plane's speed (Apr, 1933)

That the speed of an airplane may be increased from thirty-nine to 140 percent by putting a ring around the propeller is the discovery announced by two Compton, Calif., inventors.

The circular cowling is said to straighten out the air blast of the propeller and increase its effectiveness.

Vanes within the ring, which the inventors are indicating in the picture, may be adjusted during flight to increase the air drag and so serve as brakes in landing. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/05/12 - Flying Car Makes Successful Maiden Flight
"The Dutch company PAL-V completed its first series of test flights with its flying car, the PAL-V One, successfully.

The PAL-V One flies like a gyrocopter, with a minimal runway length of 165 meters, and drives around like a trike on the road.

Furthermore it offers 2 passengers a maximum speed of 180km/h both on land and in the air. The company aims with the PAL-V One at usage within the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, because private flying is more commonplace."

A PAL-V offers the choice of flying like a plane or driving like a car. This means fast door-to-door mobility for private individuals as well as professionals and organizations. The flying range will be between 350 (220 miles) and 500 km (315 miles), depending on the type and pay load. Driving, a PAL-V will have a range of about 1200 km (750 miles). It runs on gasoline and there will also be versions that use biodiesel or bio-ethanol. It can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h (110 miles/h) both on land and in the air.

On the ground the aerodynamic, 3-wheeled vehicle combines the comfort of a car with the agility of a motorcycle thanks to its patented, cutting-edge, 'tilting' system. Driving, a PAL-V accelerates like a sports car.

Flying, a PAL-V is like a standard gyrocopter. It is quieter than helicopters due to the slower rotation of the rotor. It takes off and lands with low speed, cannot stall, and is very easy to control. This makes a PAL-V one of the safest types of aircraft. Obtaining a licence requires only 20 to 30 hours of training.

It is possible to land a PAL-V practically anywhere. For take-off, a strip of 165 meters (540 feet) is enough and it can be either paved or grass.

Governments are already preparing for increasing traffic with Personal Air Vehicles like the PAL-V. In the US and in Europe government-funded programs are determining the infrastructure of 'digital freeways' to provide safe corridors using GPS technology. The technology is available today to allow personal air traffic to grow safely. PAL-V is determined to play a leading role in this market. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/05/12 - Breaking up the Hearing Aid Racket
KeelyNet Its not an unfamiliar story: Theres a niche market, which despite its relatively large size, goes unnoticed by most entrepreneurs and investors, because, simply put, its not sexy.

For this and countless other reasons, as time goes by, legacy models and hardware, fragmentation, and high prices prevail. In short, it begs for new blood, new ideas, and a fresh perspective.

The same can be said for countless industries, but its especially true for many of the markets within the bloated, backwards beast we know as the health industry.

Case in point: Hearing aids. Of the 27 million Americans who qualify for a hearing device, 75 percent choose not to purchase one only one in seven Americans over 50 years old who need a hearing aid actually wear one. The problem is a sizable one, so former Stanford University classmates Sam Tanzer and Ross Porter decided to do something about it. In early 2011, they founded a startup called Embrace Hearing to apply some entrepreneurial pressure to the situation.

The co-founders tell us the top reason that 75 percent of Americans dont purchase hearing aids is due to a familiar culprit: High cost.

If you take it from CareCredit, hearing aids range in price from $1,000 to $6,000, with the average price being $3,000. And for those who do choose to wear them, the top pain point is the high cost of replacement.

Embrace offers three lines of hearing aids, starting at $300, next at $500, and top of the line at $700. Obviously, the whole line prices way below the industry average of $3,000. Because manufacturers tend to have exclusive agreements with audiologists, Tanzer says, they collectively tend to set prices high, but the startups German manufacturer only recently decided to enter the market, and as a result, isnt tied to any exclusive partnerships.

Again, many people who would consider buying a hearing aid online opt for the more expensive alternative of working with an audiologist because they want the options of insurance coverage and follow-up visits. Because Embrace Hearing is early-stage, bootstrapped, and has a small staff, it cant manage the same kind of support as a licensed professional, but it does offer one free programming during a 45-day trial period if users arent satisfied with the initial programming.

So that means users can potentially save thousands on the cost of the device and still get one free follow-up, which, while it isnt perfect, removes a significant amount of friction from buying online.

the co-founders said that, so far, theyve been encouraged by the fact that over half of the people that have emailed or called Embrace have gone on to purchase a device from the startup. Were comfortable that the value proposition is there, so we want to focus more on socializing that value proposition in the hearing aid community, Tanzer said.

Theres a long hill to climb, and Embrace Hearing is just getting started, but theres a chance that two young entrepreneurs with a good idea might just be able to provide the impetus for changing an entire industry. And sexy or not, thats pretty cool. Hopefully after that they can move on to socializing healthcare in the U.S.

04/05/12 - Self-Sustaining Solar Reactor Creates Clean Hydrogen
KeelyNet "A mechanical engineer working out of the University of Delaware has come up with a way to produce hydrogen without any undesirable emissions such as carbon dioxide.

The solar reactor is capable of using sunlight to increase the heat inside its cylindrical structure above 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Zinc oxide powder is then gravity fed through 15 hoppers into the ceramic interior where it converts to a zinc vapor.

At that point the vapor is reacted with water separately, which in turn produces hydrogen.

If the prototype gets through 6 weeks of testing at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology located in Zurich, we could see it scaled up to industrial size, producing emission-free hydrogen."

As well as a lack of emissions, the other good news is that the zinc oxide can apparently be reused, meaning the solar reactor is theoretically self sustaining as it only relies on materials and energy that are renewable.

The solar reactor isnt exactly large, measuring 2 x 3 feet, but it is certainly heavy weighing 1,750 pounds. The entire system is a custom built prototype that will be undergoing a 6 week test from tomorrow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology located in Zurich.

The testing will prove how good (or bad) the reactor is when concentrated light equal to 10,000 suns is fed into it. The important things to prove include how reliable the reactor is, and whether the amount of hydrogen produced is significant enough to warrant taking the project beyond the prototype stage. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/05/12 - Thoughts on Superconducting Diamagnetic Water
KeelyNet Water is diamagnetic, meaning it is slightly repelled by a magnet. Imagine following this logic: a magnet repels water, you could make water float with a big magnet, a frog is mostly water,...

There was once a book I had which had ancient chinese legends. One of them tells a story about a wealthy powerful emperor who had a brilliant alchemist on his payroll.

This alchemist would come up with interesting phenomena to entertain the emperor and his court.

One day he came up with this material which when mixed with water and ingested, would cause the body to float up into the air.

It apparently had the properties of a room temperature diamagnetic superconductor which equally repelled both north and south poles.

Being superconductiving, with enough of this water saturating the body (98% water), it is possible this could actually cause the entire body to be repelled from the flux lines of the earth to give diamagnetic levitation.

The amusing part of the story said the alchemist's assistant accidentally spilled a bottle of the fluid into the watering trough for the farm animals, resulting in flying cows, pigs, goats and any other animal which drank from the trough.

Here is another story which could be just that with no basic in fact but there IS a Dexter, Kansas, which isn't far from Wichita, Kansas.

But this second story is that of the 'Floating Wonder' who lived in Kansas in the 1800s. He woke up one day to find himself stuck to the ceiling.

Something happened in his body which made him float in the air like a balloon.

He managed to find some weights to pull himself down and for many years remaining he could not work or do anything without wearing lead weights. - Full Article Source - Permalink

    04/05/12 - Tire-kickers & Time Wasting 'Investor Trolls'
KeelyNet For the past roughly 10 years, I've had discussions with a range of people who claimed to want to fund my research lab projects as proposed at; Lab Projects

I should write all that up as a learning experience for others in how NOT TO WASTE TIME like I did hoping and trusting these mostly TROLLS would actually come through with money.

Out of some 24 responses, only two seemed decent and tried to do the right thing even though their funding dreams did not come through. Now I'm pissed at myself...I should have been doing this 'tire-kicker' prove yourself approach for EVERYONE all this time instead of trusting them to be telling the truth or at least mostly the truth.

I think of all the time wasted and information passed with these trolls and nothing ever came out of it...when just say no tire-kickers and they would have melted back into the slime and leave me alone.

Years down the tubes hoping just one of these people would actually come through when the simple fact is none of them ever INTENDED to come through.

It is some kind of NEUROTIC mind game to engage you, make unlimited false promises, try to cull as much information as they can get, then disappear.

Now they say, 'Neurotics build castles in the sky, Psychotics LIVE in them.'

So I guess I'm psychotic....about alt science for sure, possibly but I truly believe in the probability that we can extract energy and thrust from other forces (gravity, magnetic, cosmic energy, earth energy, aether/zpe, etc.)..we can increase or decrease local gravity to control weight in mass and that we can heal and rejuvenate any body part.

But I don't play games with people wasting their time, so I am truly puzzled what do these bogus 'investor' people GET out of this?

Is there some sick pleasure in how many complex emails you can get someone to send you?

How many lies you can tell and see how excited your target gets, believing you to be telling the truth?

How far will your target go to even change their life and actions based on the bullshit you my friend who QUIT HIS JOB based on promises made by the Panama group.

It is thinking alien to me and how I was 'raised' and I'm hoping one day to find a decent psychology article explaining what is going on here.

I think many in the alt science field experience this and anyone who can shed light on it and send up warning flares about signs to recognize these trolls, please do share that information.

No way I would ever waste peoples time claiming I had money ready to invest in their project, then use that as some kind of leverage to ask unending questions expecting details.

I look on it as a TYPE of 'investor troll' whose goal is to get information and insights which they might can run with on their own, without cost other than emails.

I will be on the lookout for an article that deals with this peculiar mentality and with a list of warning signs to help avoid them....just tell them no tire-kickers if they can't prove who they are and that they HAVE the money...go away... - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/02/12 - New dirigibles are power plants in the sky
KeelyNet We wonder if a floating wind turbine generator (translated) like this one would alleviate some of the complaints we hear about ground-based turbines.

This huge helium-filled structure is designed to generate electricity at high altitude, where winds are stronger and blow much more consistently than near ground level.

Weve read complaints at the unsightliness of wind farms, and the noise that they make as the turbines spin.

A test run took place at only 350 feet, but this generator is meant to fly at an altitude of 2000 feet. Wed bet its much less obtrusive and much quieter at that distance.

There isnt a whole lot to the lighter-than-air assembly. Its got an aerodynamic balloon with stabilizing fins, and a propeller attached to a generator at the center.

The tether that holds it in place also carries the conductors which translate the power down to the ground.

There is mention of a fail-safe system that allows for a slow descent if it get gets away from its tether, so you shouldnt have to worry about the sky falling on you.

Its certainly an interesting idea. For some reason this makes us think of the space-based solar generator panels found on Larry Nivens Ringworld. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/02/12 - Generating Alcohol Fuels From Electrical Current and CO2
KeelyNet "A news release from UCLA describes a new process for producing biofuels using microorganisms, electrical current and carbon dioxide (abstract).

Quoting: 'Liao and his team genetically engineered a lithoautotrophic microorganism known as Ralstonia eutropha H16 to produce isobutanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol in an electro-bioreactor using carbon dioxide as the sole carbon source and electricity as the sole energy input.

Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar.

There are two parts to photosynthesis a light reaction and a dark reaction.

The light reaction converts light energy to chemical energy and must take place in the light.

The dark reaction, which converts CO2 to sugar, doesn't directly need light to occur.

"We've been able to separate the light reaction from the dark reaction and instead of using biological photosynthesis, we are using solar panels to convert the sunlight to electrical energy, then to a chemical intermediate, and using that to power carbon dioxide fixation to produce the fuel," Liao said.'"

Theoretically, the hydrogen generated by solar electricity can drive CO2 conversion in lithoautotrophic microorganisms engineered to synthesize high-energy density liquid fuels. But the low solubility, low mass-transfer rate and the safety issues surrounding hydrogen limit the efficiency and scalability of such processes. Instead Liao's team found formic acid to be a favorable substitute and efficient energy carrier.

"Instead of using hydrogen, we use formic acid as the intermediary," Liao said. "We use electricity to generate formic acid and then use the formic acid to power the CO2 fixation in bacteria in the dark to produce isobutanol and higher alcohols."

The electrochemical formate production and the biological CO2 fixation and higher alcohol synthesis now open up the possibility of electricity-driven bioconversion of CO2 to a variety of chemicals. In addition, the transformation of formate into liquid fuel will also play an important role in the biomass refinery process, according to Liao.

"We've demonstrated the principle, and now we think we can scale up," he said. "That's our next step." - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/02/12 - New Engine Raises Possibility of Cheap Travel To the Moon
"A tiny satellite thruster which can journey to the Moon on just a tenth of a litre of fuel could usher in a new low-cost space age, its creators hope.

The mini-motor weights just a few hundred grams and runs on an ionic chemical compound, using electricity to expel ions and generate thrust.

The tiny motor isn't built to blast satellites into orbit instead, it's to help spacecraft manouevre once they're in space, which previously required bulky, expensive engines."

EPFL scientist Muriel Richard added: We calculated that in order to reach lunar orbit, a 1-kg nanosatellite with our motor would travel for about six months and consume 100 millilitres of fuel.

It is due to be used on CleanSpace One, a satellite under development at EPFL that is intended to clean up space debris.

The satellite will 'grab' lumps of orbiting debris and throw them back into Earth's atmosphere, where they will burn up on re-entry.

The 10-million-franc - $11-million satellite - called CleanSpace One is being built by the Swiss Space Center at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Lausanne. - Full Article Source - Permalink

04/02/12 - Using Pulsars For Spacecraft Navigation
KeelyNet "The use of pulsars as a GPS analogue holds the promise of fixing a spacecraft's location to within 5 km, anywhere in the galaxy.

While not ready for immediate use, it may be ready for use within the Solar System in the next 10-15 years. From the article: '"The principle is so simple that it will definitely have applications," said Prof Werner Becker from the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching.

"These pulsars are everywhere in the Universe and their flashing is so predictable that it makes such an approach really straightforward," he told BBC News.'"

It is unlikely though that navigation by pulsar beacon will find immediate use.

The telescope hardware for detecting X-rays in space has traditionally been bulky and heavy.

Engineers will need to miniaturise the technology to make a practical pulsar navigation unit.

"It becomes possible with the development of lightweight X-ray mirrors," said Prof Becker.

"These are on the way for the next generation of X-ray telescopes. Current mirrors have a 100 times more weight and would be completely unusable.

"In 15-20 years, the new mirrors will be standard and our device will be ready to be built."

The scientist believes his navigation solution will certainly find use on Solar System probes, providing autonomous navigation for interplanetary missions and perhaps for future manned ventures to Mars where high performance systems will be an absolute requirement for safety reasons.

But he also likes the idea of humanity one day pushing out across interstellar space.

"You know for GPS that if you go to another country, you have to buy the maps for your device. Well, we were joking with our students in Garching about selling maps for different galaxies for ships like Enterprise [on Star Trek]." - Full Article Source - Permalink

Ever wondered what the wind would look like if you could see it in action from above? Youre about to find out.

A new project posted online Wednesday by a pair of Google computer scientists, called simply Wind Map, has to be clicked on to be believed.

The wind information, updated hourly from the National Weather Services forecast database, is portrayed as white and grey strands, almost like sand or rivulets of mercury.

It can be quite hypnotizing to watch the gusty trails blast across the American continent, skitter over the Sierras, get roughed up by the Rockies, and whoosh over the great plains on its way to Canada. (Which seems to give as good as it gets, sending most of its wind towards New York.)

Wind patterns are constantly changing, of course, which is why the Wind Map designers have also given us a moving-image gallery of previous blustery days. - Full Article Source - Permalink

KeelyNet Finally, I've gotten around to compiling all the files (almost 1,000 - about 20MB and lots of work doing it) from the original KeelyNet BBS into a form you can easily navigate and read using your browser, ideally Firefox but it does work with IE. Most of these files are extremely targeted, interesting and informative, I had forgotten just how much but now you can have the complete organized, categorized set, not just sprinklings from around the web. They will keep you reading for weeks if not longer and give you clues and insights into many subjects and new ideas for investigation and research. IN ADDITION, I am including as a bonus gift, the book (in PDF form) that started it all for me, 'Keely and his Discoveries - Aerial Navigation' which includes the analysis of Keely's discoveries by Dr. Daniel G. Brinton. This 407 page eBook alone is worth the price of the KeelyNet BBS CD but it will give you some degree of understanding about what all Keely accomplished which is just now being rediscovered, but of course, without recognizing Keely as the original discoverer. Chapters include; Vibratory Sympathetic and Polar Flows, Vibratory Physics, Latent Force in Interstitial Spaces and much more. To give some idea of how Keely's discoveries are being slowly rediscovered in modern times, check out this Keely History. These two excellent bodies of information will be sent to you on CD. If alternative science intrigues and fascinates you, this CD is what you've been looking for... - More Info

'The Evolution of Matter' and 'The Evolution of Forces' on CD
KeelyNet Years ago, I had been told by several people, that the US government frequently removes books they deem dangerous or 'sensitive' from libraries. Some are replaced with sections removed or rewritten so as to 'contain' information that should not be available to the public despite the authors intent. A key example was during the Manhattan Project when the US was trying to finalize research into atomic bombs. They removed any books that dealt with the subject and two of them were by Dr. Gustave Le Bon since they dealt with both energy and matter including radioactivity. I had been looking for these two books for many years and fortunately stumbled across two copies for which I paid about $40.00 each. I couldn't put down the books once I started reading them. Such a wealth of original discoveries, many not known or remembered today. / Page 88 - Without the ether there could be neither gravity, nor light, nor electricity, nor heat, nor anything, in a word, of which we have knowledge. The universe would be silent and dead, or would reveal itself in a form which we cannot even foresee. If one could construct a glass chamber from which the ether were to be entirely eliminated, heat and light could not pass through it. It would be absolutely dark, and probably gravitation would no longer act on the bodies within it. They would then have lost their weight. / Page 96-97 - A material vortex may be formed by any fluid, liquid or gaseous, turning round an axis, and by the fact of its rotation it describes spirals. The study of these vortices has been the object of important researches by different scholars, notably by Bjerkness and Weyher. They have shown that by them can be produced all the attractions and repulsions recognized in electricity, the deviations of the magnetic needle by currents, etc. These vortices are produced by the rapid rotation of a central rod furnished with pallets, or, more simply, of a sphere. Round this sphere gaseous currents are established, dissymetrical with regard to its equatorial plane, and the result is the attraction or repulsion of bodies brought near to it, according to the position given to them. It is even possible, as Weyher has proved, to compel these bodies to turn round the sphere as do the satellites of a planet without touching it. / Page 149 - "The problem of sending a pencil of parallel Hertzian waves to a distance possesses more than a theoretical interest. It is allowable to say that its solution would change the course of our civilization by rendering war impossible. The first physicist who realizes this discovery will be able to avail himself of the presence of an enemy's ironclads gathered together in a harbour to blow them up in a few minutes, from a distance of several kilometres, simply by directing on them a sheaf of electric radiations. On reaching the metal wires with which these vessels are nowadays honeycombed, this will excite an atmosphere of sparks which will at once explode the shells and torpedoes stored in their holds. With the same reflector, giving a pencil of parallel radiations, it would not be much more difficult to cause the explosion of the stores of powder and shells contained in a fortress, or in the artillery sparks of an army corps, and finally the metal cartridges of the soldiers. Science, which at first rendered wars so deadly, would then at length have rendered them impossible, and the relations between nations would have to be established on new bases." - More Info

As well the hypnotic gaze of snakes, the discovery of 'eyebeams' which can be detected electronically, the Italian Hypnotist Robber who was caught on tape with his eyes glowing as cashiers handed over their money and remembered nothing, glamour and clouding the mind of others, several methods of trance induction and many odd cases, animal catatonia, healing, psychic phenomena, party/stage stunts, including my favorite of negative hallucination where you make your subject NOT see something...much more...if nothing else, its might be a hoot to read. - More Info

14 Ways to Save Money on Fuel Costs
KeelyNetThis eBook is the result of years of research into various methods to increase mileage, reduce pollution and most importantly, reduce overall fuel costs. It starts out with the simplest methods and offers progressively more detailed technologies that have been shown to reduce fuel costs. As a bonus to readers, I have salted the pages with free interesting BONUS items that correlate to the relevant page. Just filling up with one tank of gas using this or other methods explained here will pay for this eBook. Of course, many more methods are out there but I provided only the ones which I think are practical and can be studied by the average person who is looking for a way to immediately reduce their fuel costs. I am currently using two of the easier methods in my own vehicle which normally gets 18-22 mpg and now gets between 28 and 32 mpg depending on driving conditions. A tank of gas for my 1996 Ford Ranger costs about $45.00 here so I am saving around $15-$20 PER TANK, without hurting my engine and with 'greener' emissions due to a cleaner burn! The techniques provided in this ebook begin with simple things you can do NOW to improve your mileage and lower your gas costs. - eBook Download / More Info

The Physics of the Primary State of Matter
KeelyNet The Physics of the Primary State of Matter - published in the 1930s, Karl Schappeller described his Prime Mover, a 10-inch steel sphere with quarter-inch copper tubing coils. These were filled with a material not named specifically, but which is said to have hardened under the influence of direct current and a magnetic field [electro-rheological fluid]. With such polarization, it might be guessed to act like a dielectric capacitor and as a diode... - More Info

    Guidelines for Alternative Science

Alternative science covers a wide range of interests. Generally, it includes gravity control, free energy, electronic healing techniques, all forms of energy conversion, antigravity, levitation, overunity, time travel (as well as slowing down or speeding up local time).

Also clearly covered is the art of power generation (ideally zero point or aether conversion), space travel, physics of matter and energy, sound/acoustics and how it can be used to produce useful phenomena, electric or magnetic forces to produce useful phenomena, various types of motors, vacuum energy, dimensional travel and shifts, medicine, hydrogen generation and how it is used.

It also covers oil/petroleum and how it can be used to produce energy and products, weather control for cancelling earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, floods and to produce rain or clear weather on demand, oxygen/ozone therapy, nitrogen as a motor driver, water generation and manipulation via steam and vacuum, ecological restoration techniques, biophysics, rejuvenation and an unending list of other subjects, most of which are accepted by 'orthodox' science.
