It may be a little misleading to present the solar heating as a new invention. In 1978, Sunmaster Corp. in Corning developed and patented the first commercially successful solar collection system, using evacuated tubes similar to those depicted in the photograph with the Nov. 14 article. For a while, the tubes were manufactured in Corning. That business failed after 1985 when government incentives were discontinued. There are numerous installations of Sunmaster collectors still working all over the country, nearly 30 years later. 11/21/09 - Don't get burned by Ads for this Heater
The Amish mantle from Heat Surge has been around for several years, and it's hard to believe it hasn't gotten enough bad press to make sure everyone is aware of it, but Larry and Brenda are proof that its mass ad campaigns continue to leave an impression on consumers. If you've missed the ads -- typically designed to look like newspaper articles -- they carry headlines like "Amish mantle and miracle invention help home heat bills hit rock bottom." Some of the ads have promised to give away these "miracle heaters" for free, although you only actually get them that way if you buy the surrounding mantle, which will set you back about $300. The device -- formally called a Roll-n-Glow Fireplace -- is a portable heater built to look like an actual fireplace. The "miracle" is the "fireless flame," which basically is a fake fireplace; it doesn't appear to be much different than the film-loop fireplaces that some community television stations use as a backdrop when they don't have fresh programming over the holidays. They're about as warm as those images, too. You get the fireplace look without the flame, ashes, soot, smell, mess or chimney. Don't believe the hype. If you're looking for some type of country, feel-good feeling from the Amish connection, you're stretching. Some Amish don't use electricity, so an electric heater made in China isn't too authentic; in fact, it's only the mantle that goes around the heating unit that is made by Amish craftsmen. The product's claims, however, are the biggest issue. They can be boiled down to this line in the ad: "Only uses about 9 cents electric an hour; so turn down your thermostat and never be cold again." U.S. Department of Energy studies show that space heaters save money only when they heat one room at a time, so that you take the heater with you and keep the neighboring rooms chilly. The Amish heater does roll, but it's a lot clunkier than most portable heaters; plus, that fake fireplace might look a bit goofy standing in the middle of the kitchen or laundry room when you need to warm those areas up. Moreover, electric costs per hour vary not only by the setting you put the heater on, but also based on the electric rates where you live. And then there's the claim that the Amish Fireplace produces "an amazing 5,119 BTU." If you remember high-school science classes, you might recall that BTUs (British Thermal Units, a measure of heat created by burning any material) are standard. If you have a 1,500-watt heater -- the wattage of the Roll-n-Glow -- it's going to be capable of producing 5,119 BTU. That's also the BTU capability of the $35 space heater you can get on sale at local hardware stores, at big-box office-supply stores or anywhere heaters are sold. There is no type of heater that can miraculously convert 1,500 watts into more than 5,119 BTUs. / Who are the Amish, and what are their beliefs? Question: "Who are the Amish, and what are their beliefs?" Answer: The Amish are a group of people who follow the teachings of Jacob Ammann, a seventeenth century citizen of Switzerland. It is a Protestant denomination, closely related to the Mennonites. The Amish, most of whom live in the United States, follow simple customs and refuse to take oaths, vote, or perform military service. They shun modern technology and conveniences. Transportation for the Amish is by horse and buggy. They do not have electricity or telephones in their homes. The men usually wear beards and pants with buttons instead of zippers. The women wear white head coverings and plain dresses, usually without buttons—they use straight pins to fasten the clothing. The Amish believe that James 1:27 "...and to keep oneself unspotted from the world" means to stay away from things the "world" does—like driving autos, having a TV, going to movies, wearing make-up, and the enjoying the conveniences of electricity and phones. 11/21/09 - New solar energy technology wins accolades
A shingle that generates solar energy was named one of the 50 Best Innovations of 2009 by Time magazine. Dow Chemical, the Powerhouse Solar Shingle's inventor, will make the shingles commercially available by the middle of next year. Dow's technology "will make affordable renewable energy a reality now and for future generations," said Dow Solar Solutions managing director Jane Palmieri. The Powerhouse design includes thin-film cells of copper indium gallium diselenide. Dow notes the cells' low cost relative to other solar technologies. And, on top of low cost, Dow's new shingle has other advantages. The company reports that the installation process is no different than that of traditional shingles, making Powerhouse shingles attractive to contractors. [Robotkid249] details how to build a wireless power transmission system. This is similar to the commercial applications we have seen in a TED talk as well is in a Sony prototype. Power is fed to a ring made of magnet wire. A smaller loop is attached to the system that you want to power and picked up from the base unit. In this case, he is powering some LEDs but the concept can be tailored for your purposes such as an inductive charging pad. We’d like to see a hack that incorporates the base into a mouse pad (or the desk itself) and the receiver into the body of a wireless mouse. 11/21/09 - Mobile Water Purification Offers Hope To Disaster-Hit Regions
A Japanese team has developed Courier Water, a mobile desalination unit that has tremendous potential for helping people in areas affected by water shortages or natural disasters. The unit’s defining feature is its mobility. With its compact design, Courier Water can be installed on a four-ton truck, allowing it to travel far and wide. It incorporates a pump that produces pressure of about 6 MPa, enough to desalinize seawater, with only a small amount of energy. On the roof are solar panels that spread to over twice the truck’s width, and two wind turbines. In fair weather the electricity generated from the sun and wind can provide nearly 100% of the power needed, enabling the system to operate even in areas with an inadequate power supply, such as remote or disaster-affected communities. Courier Water employs a safe coagulant made from natural substances including polyglutamic acid and calcium. Polyglutamic acid is an amino acid polymer widely known to be responsible for the threadlike goo of natto, the traditional Japanese food otherwise known as fermented soybeans. The coagulant is used to clot particles of impurities in the water prior to filtration by reverse osmosis, simplifying the filtration process. Coagulation significantly improves water quality, as well as reducing the strain on the reverse osmosis membrane. In addition to its safety and efficiency, Courier Water’s coagulant is distinct in that it has little effect on the pH level of the water. This eliminates the need to adjust the pH of the water using sodium hydroxide or other caustic agents, which cannot be handled without a special license. The coagulant also removes any heavy metals contained in the water. The truck-loaded Courier Water is capable of producing 7.2 tons of drinking water in a day, enough for 3,600 people, assuming that a person drinks 2 liters per day. A container-type system has also been developed. We stumbled onto one of [Nik Melton]’s projects, an Omni-car. It is omnidirectional, meaning it can go any direction at any time without having to turn. The body was designed by him, then printed with a 3D printer. The control scheme is what interests us though. He has found a simple way to wire it to get the job done. Sure you can see that it suffers from some pretty bad “drift” when trying to go in a straight line, but overall, we think he pulled it off well. You might want to take a few moments to look around his project page. This guy has done a bunch of fun stuff like delta robots, strange hybrid wheel/leg robots, tesla coils, and arm mounted flamethrowers. Judging by the videos, he’s pretty young too. "Boeing's directed-energy weapons (a.k.a. frickin' laser beams) have been getting some attention lately. The Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) is a C-130 that famously burned a hole through a car's hood, and the YAL-1 AirBorne Laser is a 747 that shoots a laser from its nose that is powerful enough to bring down an ICBM. How often do you change the batteries in your television remote control? Yeah, basically never. But that’s a tribute to how efficient the device is and not a reason to overlook this development. NEC is showing off a remote control that uses no batteries. Power is generated using the piezo effect that occurs when a button is pushed. That is to say, when a crystal is compressed it emits a tiny bit of electricity which is harnessed and used to power this device. This is the same principle that is used in the electricity producing sidewalks tested in Japan. It’s pretty phenomenal that they can run the device using this method. Right now there’s only a handful of buttons but we’re sure there’ll be advances in the technology. There’s a ton of use for this if it can be miniaturized. In one view, the destruction of old energy technology and its replacement could become the basis for a new round of capitalist growth. In another analysis, the changes necessary to halt global warming cannot be contained within capitalism. It will be argued that the technological changes required are so very major as to imply a drastic reduction in material production and consumption. The consequences of doing nothing are equally drastic. One possible outcome is world revolution, despite the absence of a strong anti-capitalist movement today. Another option is that the capitalist class will agree to a new dispensation and direct much productive capacity to saving the planet. The capitalist class would be behaving more like a redistributive chieftainship; extracting surplus value and redistributing it. Or these problems could be resolved coercively in a technocratic feudalism. A likely outcome is a last days flurry of grand projects and expensive wars, followed by a collapse in food production and population. So whatever is done to resolve the environmental crisis, we are not going to end up with a capitalist society. For environmental activists, putting environmental outcomes first is just as likely to bring down capitalism as a campaign to end capitalist society. GDP of the world’s largest cities with emerging economies will experience rapid growth. In 2008 the largest 100 cities accounted for about 30% of global GDP and some have bigger economies than medium-sized countries like Sweden or Switzerland. Within the last three years, Moscow has leaped from the 25th to the 15th place in this rating. Tokyo that produced goods and services totaling to $1.479 trillion last year leads the rating. The next three positions are taken by American agglomerations: New York ($1.406 trillion), Los Angeles ($792 billion), and Chicago ($574 billion). The size of economy of the first two of these cities amounted to nearly $1.5 trillion each, which is close to the size of economy of Spain. The most noticeable change in the first ten positions since 2005 was London ($565 billion) getting ahead of Paris ($564 billion) by a billion dollars and taking the 5th place. San Paulo took the 10th place and neared Philadelphia with $388 billion. The top 10 include two countries-representatives of the Old World, five North American metropolises (including Mexico City with $390 billion, 8th place), and two Japanese agglomerations – Tokyo and Osaka/Kobe ($417 billion, 7th place). Batteries that harvest energy from the nuclear decay of isotopes can produce very low levels of current and last for decades without needing to be replaced. A new version of the batteries, called betavoltaics, is being developed by an Ithaca, NY-based company and tested by Lockheed Martin. Steen Riisgaard, the CEO of Novozymes, based in Denmark, had more specific recommendations for the biofuels industry. He said the current 10 percent limit on the amount of ethanol in gasoline is slowing down the industry in the United States. He said that the EPA should raise what he called this "arbitrary limit" on ethanol content to 15 percent. The current limit effectively puts a cap on the amount of ethanol that can be sold in the U.S. Riisgaard's other suggestions sounded less controversial. He wants the federal government to require 50 percent of all new vehicles in the next couple of years to be flex fuel vehicles capable of running on 85 percent ethanol (which seems feasible given the low cost of doing this), to require 25 percent of the largest gas stations to install E-85 pumps by 2014 (funded by reducing subsidies to the gasoline industry), and to require federal agencies to buy only flex-fuel vehicles and use only E-85 in new vehicles. Finally he called on the Department of Energy to send out what remains of $480 million already approved for funding advanced biofuels. For years, Israeli researcher Gal Luft has been preaching about "energy security" in Washington, and warning that the oil addiction is making the West a captive to threatening and unstable regimes. In his lectures, he reminds Americans that in their land of suburbia, it is impossible even to buy bread without driving a petroleum-fueled car. It was while working on microbes that can be used as purifying agents that Manoj Mandelia, a fourth year student of biotech engineering, stumbled upon the idea that if a bio cell can be developed to treat sewage water for use, it would solve one of the biggest problems of the present times. The idea is simple. The specially designed bio cell (LOCUS) will be set up in the form of a plant, through which the sewage water of a housing complex would be flowed in. The genius of this invention which is awaiting patent lies in the design of the cell that will automatically grow millions of anaerobic bacteria that multiply through respiration. The bacteria clean up the sewage water and in the process generate free electrons. If harnessed, these electrons can generated electricity. The cell, at this stage, can clean up 50,000 litres of sewage water, about the amount generated by 100 flats in a day. The water produced this way can be compared with that supplied provided by a civic body, the students say. "The purified water has been tested and has been certified to be clean and fit for household use. It is, however, not fit for drinking," Mandelia explained. The IIT-Kgp team has even produced electricity with the bio cell. "A township of 100,000 people needs about 2.3 megawatts of electricity a day. It will be years before we reach that stage. But we have already been able to generate electricity. By next year, we aim to generate 350 units, enough to meet 50% of the demand of a 100-flat complex. There were few economists who really believed, despite the promises that the money would go to shovel ready projects that could begin immediately once the funding came through, that the stimulus would really create any net jobs. It comes as little surprise that the recipients of the stimulus money have been, to put it indelicately, cooking the books. Both ABC News and the Washington, DC Examiner have been monitoring the spending as posted on the government's recovery.gov website and have found egregious errors, including money being spent in non-existent congressional districts and public entities claiming the stimulus money saved their entire workforce. Vice President Joe Biden, when told of the problems, reportedly told those responsible for the website to "fix it." Having dealt with the "jobs issue" early on in his administration, President Obama thought he could move on to healthcare, a national energy tax, the abolition of "Don't ask, Don't tell," and other issues that were important to his political base. 11/18/09 - Super Efficient Hydrogen Generator PDF
From Jeffrey Sokol - George Wiseman and I have been speaking daily about WFC invention a retired physicist friend of mine produced. He is in AZ, and says he can run a 3.6 kw generator with his HHO fuel cell design, at a full load, with only 10% of the power created by the generator. George asked me to make contact with you so we can get the information out there together, and we must act quickly. I'll be selling the information on how to replicate the design online... My friend in AZ says that his cells are stackable, so they can be fitted to larger generators to power homes like 17 kw or even 100 kw with enough cells. Oh, by the way, the cells only use distilled water, and usually zero electrolyte. The past times he's used tap water, it's had way too much electrolyte for the cell. The cells don't get above 88 degrees. He has all the notes and photos to make a complete packet of information. / The cell is a 12.5 volt design, to be used anywhere. What makes it so amazing, is that the inventor, Dr. Steven Eaton, has designed it so that physics work with the cell, instead of against it. The cell is incredibly efficient, able to produce approximately 5 liters per minute, with less than 15 amps, with absolutely ZERO electrolyte. The cell in previous testing has not reached over 88 degrees. Previous models were completed, producing 2 lpm with 10 amps each. 3 of those units were fitted to run a 3.55 kw Troy Bilt Generator. The generator ran 100% on 6 LPM of HHO gas, which was produced by the Troy Bilt Generator itself, and ran light bulbs and other shop devices. The only thing that bogged it down was a large bench grinder drawing 4.9 amps on top of the 200 watts being taken from 2 light bulbs. The key here, is that electricity was being produced with 100% water for fuel technology, no gasoline or any other fossil fuels. The Troy Bilt generated enough power off of HHO gas, to operate the HHO cells, and provide extra power for small household items. This newest design will be finished and tested very soon... 'Anybots' are controlled via video-game-like controls from your laptop, allowing you to be “present” without actually being in the office. The robots are equipped with a screen displaying your smiling mug to your co-workers, as well as a camera that beams a feed straight to your computer screen. They’re also mobile, so you can still drop by co-workers’ offices unannounced, presumably to let them know that a robot will be filling in for you today. There are a few variations that Anybots is toying with, including one with long arms and hands, and another with a laser pointer.
